Scientific Director, Ruesch Center – Georgetown University Medical Center

Georgetown’s Ruesch Center is a multi-matrixed organization dependent on a diverse group of partners for our success, and our partners rely on the Center to support their work. Gastrointestinal cancers represent a high-volume population for the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, and the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute. The Ruesch Center provides research, programmatic, and communications activities.

Job Overview

The Scientific Director has multiple roles in the Georgetown-MedStar system and relies on a small administrative team to ensure the implementation of all Center activities. As well, they play a critical role in building and maintaining relationships with Georgetown and MedStar clinicians and researchers through the promotion of collaborations across research interests, and in providing quality scientific writing and editing services.

The Scientific Director is responsible for the direction of Ruesch Center research programs. Collaborates with research leadership and project PIs in setting research goals and program strategies. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Collaborates with The Ruesch Center Director and PIs to understand their objectives and develop an overall strategy that is aligned and focused on achieving Ruesch Center research goals.
  • Leads the creation of key publications, from data collection and analysis through to final production and publication in high-impact medical and scientific journals, in conjunction with peers across the organization.
  • Uses scientific knowledge and analytical skills to research, interpret, and present (often using tables and figures) complex clinical and scientific data and study design and methodology.
  • Performs literature searches to ensure accurate discussion of up-to-date literature.
  • Promotes writing services within the Ruesch and Cancer Center.

In addition to research planning and creating manuscripts for publication, the Scientific Director

  • Identifies writing and grant opportunities and contributes ideas for all Ruesch Center presented content.
  • Creates and/or edits abstracts for scientific meetings, Web-based articles, IIT clinical trial concepts, IIT protocols, patient consent forms, clinical trial reports, grant proposals, and poster and oral presentations for various audiences.
  • Develops original, accurate, grammatically correct, clear, and concise medical/scientific content for various audiences in the academic and healthcare fields.
  • Collaborates with faculty and administrative staff to keep project, publication, and grant application data up to date and presents these data for discussion at team meetings monthly.
  • Conducts weekly comprehensive GI cancer literature searches and related social media blasts.
  • Manages the GI Working Group for LCCC
  • Collaborates with Ruesch team members on education and communications projects, including annual symposia, and creates and edits material for promotional and patient-centered initiatives - e.g., The Ruesch Annual Report, newsletters, brochures, and clinical trial information.
  • Manages, executes, and submits all writing projects to fixed deadlines.
  • Mentors clinical fellows and junior faculty on medical writing skills and content production.

Work Interactions

The Scientific Director reports to the Ruesch Center Director, who has multiple roles in the Georgetown-MedStar system and relies on a small administrative team to ensure the implementation of all Center activities.

Qualifications

  • A clinical science-related Master's degree – preference for a Doctoral degree
  • 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Excellent collaborative project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Advanced grammar and sentence structure and design skills
  • Ability to learn and understand new scientific concepts quickly and comprehensively and keep updated on scientific literature, drug approvals, and oncology guidelines
  • An understanding of clinical research, study design, biostatistics, medical terminology, drug development, and the basics of regulatory requirements
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and summarize data
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly relating to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; literature search engines - e.g. , PubMed and Google) - and citation management - e.g. , EndNote
  • Proven experience writing for a range of audiences, including academics and laymen
  • A team player with good interpersonal skills

Preferred qualification

American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) certification
