Department Summary

This position exists within the University of Oregon/College of Arts & Sciences/Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. The Department consists of approximately 150 faculty, graduate students, and staff. The primary purpose of the Department is to provide collegiate education, community service and an environment for scholarly research. The Department services approximately 20,000 students, various governmental agencies and the public, state-wide.


Position Summary

The Science Lab Preparator performs skilled and specialized preparatory functions in support of the teaching of chemistry. Duties include:

• preparing experiments for laboratory courses;
• responding to faculty and student needs for solutions, supplies, apparatus, and instrumentation;
• instructing students and staff in proper operation of instruments, such as pH meters, spectrophotometers, and chromatography instruments;
• maintaining and operating laboratory computers and equipment;
• calibrating and aligning equipment and instruments;
• identifying and assessing chemical hazards, risks, and exposure;
• implementing safety procedures and assuring compliance with state, local, and departmental safety procedures;
• supervising, training, and overseeing the daily activities of student employees.

This position is a full-time, 9-month appointment that aligns with the academic year (September through June).


Minimum Requirements

• Twelve college credit hours with passing grades in a physical and/or life science, which included laboratory procedures, such as anatomy, biology, botany, chemistry, general science, geology, physics, or zoology;
AND
• One year of laboratory experience which provided knowledge of laboratory testing and/or demonstration methods and techniques.


Professional Competencies

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• Good computer skills.
• Demonstrated supervision skills.


Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, including lab/coursework in Quantitative Analysis.
• Laboratory preparation experience in a commercial chemical lab or, ideally, a college-level chemistry lab.
