- The Resource Assistant Program seeks to engage ethnically and racially diverse young professionals in natural resource careers. All interns must be fully vaccinated for covid-19 prior to the start of their internship. Vehicle and Driver License Requirements: Applicants should have personal transportation and must possess a valid U.S. Driver’s License. Position Description: The RA would join a hard-working, creative and friendly staff group – the Science Application and Communication Team at the Rocky Mountain Research Station, which covers 12 states in the Intermountain West. The selected intern would be exposed to a wide variety of science communication work in support of science produced by the Rocky Mountain Research Station. The Intern would be mentored by the Station’s Public & Legislative Affairs Lead, Lisa Bryant. This person would also work closely with the station’s science delivery and publications groups. Depending upon the intern’s interests and skills, the work could vary from developing social media and website content, writing press releases, blogs, briefing papers and other written communications, organizing and preparing legislative outreach materials, and/or assisting with website development. Other opportunities include developing visual communications such as infographics and figures and editing high quality photographs and video. We would expect this person to receive training and exposure to a wide variety of the work listed above. RA will gain the following skills: Communicating science to broad audiences, including media, legislators, and the general public through a variety of platforms including written, infographics/brochures, video/photo, website/social media, and more. Exposure and ability to work with scientists working on cutting edge technology and research in natural resources Natural and Physical Work Environment: This is a virtual position. The incumbent will be expected to work in a location where they can provide a safe and ergonomically appropriate workspace for themselves. Internet access is required. A government furnished computer will be provided. Although this is a virtual position, the internship experience could be enhanced if the selected candidate is located or choses to live near the Fort Collins, CO headquarters office or other RMRS research facility, as this could provide more opportunities for photo/videography and interacting with RMRS communications staff and scientists in the field.

- Abilities and Skills: -Strong interest in natural resources, science, and communications. -Good writing skills are a plus. -Skills with or willingness to learn videography, photo, and publishing are also helpful. Education and Qualifications: The intern that would benefit most from this position would be someone with a degree or interest in pursuing a degree in natural resource science, forest/range management, or communications/journalism (science writing focused) – this is not required, but this opportunity would benefit these interns more. Demonstrated strong writing and oral communication skills will be part of the evaluation criteria.
