Required Degree: A Masters or PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy and a minimum of 2 years as a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) in Utah.

The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:  Preference will be given to applicants who have been licensed at least 2 years and those who are both a Utah state and an AAMFT Approved Supervisor.

Duties/Expectations: Successful applicants will teach a 3-credit, semester or term class on Advanced Clinical work to about 6 graduate students in the School of Family Life in the Marriage and Family Therapy PhD program. This course provides the opportunity for practice of marital and family therapy in the Brigham Young University Comprehensive Clinic under faculty supervision. Practicum is designed to assist students in becoming a competent Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) by helping translate and apply what they have learned in didactic courses to actual clinical cases. It is important to keep in mind that the Core Competencies are based on aptitudes that it is anticipated you will have developed and be able to demonstrate approximately five years after beginning your training in MFT (around the time you receive your therapy license as an MFT).

To that end, and in accordance with the Core Competencies for Marriage and Family Therapists as developed by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), practicum will emphasize the development of skills associated with the six Core Competency Domains: (1) Admission to Treatment, (2) Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis, (3) Treatment Planning and Case Management, (4) Therapeutic Interventions, and (5) Legal Issues, Ethics, and Standards, and (6) Understanding and Respect for Cultural Diversity. In addition, as a faculty, we have added (7) Supervision and Self of the Therapist. The first 6 competencies are those identified as essential areas by the AAMFT Regulatory Board. These areas are included on the MFT national licensure examination. (http://www.AAMFTRB.org).
