Scope of Job
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as an Assistant Professor in Art History at the School of Art & Design beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year.
The successful candidate will teach Art History I and Art History II survey courses with additional courses in their specialty. Preference will be given to candidates with a specialization in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican art or Modern Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx art, as well as Modern and Contemporary Latin American art history. In recognition of the complex overlapping histories, continuities, and discontinuities of indigeneity and colonization, successful candidates may engage with pre-1500 visual and material cultures regardless of their chronological or geographical specializations in Latin America. A candidate trained in relevant languages for research and mentoring is a plus, as well as being engaged in the study of images, manuscript traditions, artifacts, architecture, archaeological sites, museum collections or other visual material, and cultural practices. The Department welcomes research profiles that include emerging national and /or international collaboration, curatorial scholarship, public scholarship or outreach, archive initiatives, activism, cultural revitalization, historical conservation, or other modes of intellectual and institutional labor.
The appointee will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of expertise along with art history survey courses; mentor undergraduate students and supervise master students; and contribute to UTRGV’s bicultural mission as the second largest Hispanic serving institution of higher learning in the state.
This is a tenure-track faculty position (rank of Assistant Professor) scheduled to begin September 1, 2024.
Responsibilities include:
● Teach at the BA and/or MFA level as assigned by the Director of the School of Art and Design on two campuses 65 miles apart in distance.
● Pursue research/creative activity in relevant discipline and maintain a substantive record of professional/peer recognition.
● Engage in service to the school, college, university, community, and profession.
● Demonstrate ability to mentor undergraduate students and supervise master students.
● Maintain an active and recognized professional practice of research investigations.
● Actively participate in departmental, college, and university service and leadership, including committee work and academic support services such as portfolio reviews, student advising, and recruitment activities.
● Implement and assess program outcomes and assessment procedures as required.

Department/CollegeBackground
The UTRGV School of Art and Design has 550 majors, 150 minors, and 22 graduate students enrolled in the areas of foundation, painting, drawing, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, printing making, graphic design, art history, and art education. The School of Art and Design is comprised of 34 full-time faculty members within a 70,000-square-foot art and design facility in Edinburg, a short distance from the main campus with university-provided transportation. The School of Art and Design operates in two locations: in Edinburg, and on the Brownville campus on the grounds of historic Fort Brown.
Minimum Qualifications
● A terminal degree (Ph.D.) required in professional activity and/or research that demonstrates an established emerging national recognition in the field of art history is paramount.
● Candidates will continue professional research that is relevant and contributes to the current and future practice of their field.
● Demonstrate outstanding verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
● A commitment to quality, student-centered education and working as a team member and a demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse student populations is necessary.
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications
● Preferred Qualifications: (scholarship in their field (including three to five samples of previous publications).
● Two (2) years of teaching experience in a college or university, demonstrating familiarity with best teaching practices, pedagogical innovation, inclusive strategies, and teaching that incorporates new technologies.
● Candidates should also have some experience with department/college-wide or community service.
● Demonstrate various professional accomplishments in their discipline.
● Applicants should have a working knowledge of the foreign language/s required of their field.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
