UChicago STEM Education is a center devoted to research and development that resides within the Physical Sciences Division (PSD) of the University of Chicago. Formerly the Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education, UChicago STEM Education continues the University of Chicago’s long-standing commitment to improving precollege education and aims to support high quality mathematics and science instruction and learning for all students. Through the sharing of knowledge and the creation of useful products and programs, UChicago STEM Education seeks to make a positive difference for mathematics and science instruction throughout the nation. UChicago STEM Education’s work comprises three components: (1) Research and Evaluation, (2) Tool Development, and (3) School Support Services. Separately, each of these components is a necessary part of improving mathematics and science education. Within UChicago STEM Education, they inform one another and constitute a rigorous, comprehensive approach to supporting high quality education.


Job Summary
 

The Curriculum Developer uses best practices and provides knowledge to the development of programs for primary and secondary schools. Designs and implements programs and materials that contribute to school development and/or professional development of principals, teachers, and other school leaders.
The Curriculum Developer will work on a team at UChicago STEM Education that will revise existing lessons and activities and develop new activities and lessons for revisions to the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project’s PreK to Grade 6 program.

Responsibilities

  • Plans the development, review, and revisions of mathematics activities, lessons, and assessments with a team for PreK to Grade 6 students, as well as accompanies teacher and family materials, based on research, feedback from teachers and others, changing requirements in state or national standards and documents, and market demands.
  • Develops PreK through Grade 6 mathematics curriculum materials for print and digital instructional delivery formats.
  • Conducts literature reviews and drafts white papers.
  • Develops programs for primary and secondary school education. Requires a deep understanding of the field of primary and secondary school education.
  • Conducts research and development of curriculum, models, and best practices in the field of education. Works with school leadership teams to support school planning processes including needs assessments, goal setting, strategic planning, and determining strategies for curriculum selection and professional development. May lead the implementation of professional development workshops and individualized coaching efforts for principals, teachers, and other school staff.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:

  • Advanced degree in elementary education, mathematics, or a related field.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Proficiency with standard word processing programs (Microsoft Word and Google Docs).
  • Proficiency with G Suite.

  • Deep knowledge of elementary mathematics standards, content, and curriculum.
  • Strong organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, including providing and responding well to constructive feedback.
  • Ability to work independently, including keeping track of and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Working Conditions

  • Work occasional evenings and weekends. 
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Manage stressful situations.
