: 

The University of Houston, Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts is seeking a highly motivated and creative individual to join our team as a non-tenure track Scholar in Residence. As the Scholar in Residence, you will be responsible for managing and facilitating activities within our state-of-the-art maker space, fostering an environment of creativity, collaboration, and innovation. This is a position that offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of the intersection between arts and technology.

 1.    Maker Space Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the maker space, ensuring all tools, equipment, and materials are in good working condition and readily available for users.
2.    Technical Support: Provide expert guidance and technical assistance to students, faculty, and staff utilizing the maker space facilities for their creative projects.
3.    Teaching Load: Conduct one course each semester related to maker space technologies and creative practices, providing students with hands-on learning experiences and mentorship.
4.    Workshop Facilitation: Organize and lead workshops and training sessions on various creative technologies, such as 3D printing, laser cutting, electronics, and other maker tools.
5.    Project Consultation: Assist users in conceptualizing and planning their projects, offering insights into material selection, fabrication techniques, and best practices.
6.    Community Building: Foster a collaborative maker community by organizing events, competitions, and networking opportunities to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration.
7.    Safety and Compliance: Enforce safety protocols and best practices within the maker space, ensuring a secure environment for all users.
8.    Equipment Maintenance: Regularly inspect and maintain all equipment, coordinating repairs and replacements as necessary.
9.    Documentation: Keep accurate records of maker space usage, inventory, and user feedback, providing insights for continuous improvement.

Qualifications

: 

  • A Master's Degree in a relevant field, such as art, design, engineering, or a related discipline. Demonstrated experience in managing maker spaces, Workshops, or similar creative environments. 
  • Proficiency in using various maker technologies, including 3D printers, laser cutters, large plotter inkjet printers, Risograph printing, and design software. 
  • Strong detail-oriented professional with strong business management expertise to excel in spreadsheet analysis, budget maintenance, and record-keeping for our organization. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and support a the community of makers. 
  • Creative problem-solving skills and a passion for inspiring innovation through hands-on projects.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • A collaborative and team-oriented mindset, able to work effectively in an interdisciplinary setting.
