Job Summary
The Environmental Safety Technician will support the day-to-day operations of the UT Dallas hazardous material and waste programs as well as supporting departmental responsibilities associated with waste management by collecting, transporting and disposing hazardous materials in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations, and University policies. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
The Environmental Safety Technician must be able to develop and maintain strong collaborative and professional relationships with researchers and other University support personnel while actively promoting a culture of safety.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma; three to five years related experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience will be considered; computer skills for reports and presentations.

  • BS or MS in Environmental Science or Chemistry
  • Experience:
  • 2+ years of experience in an academic research laboratory setting or environmental/hazardous waste company
  • Knowledge of federal and state waste regulations; IATA/DOT knowledge a plus
  • OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collects and transports hazardous materials and/or waste from individual generation sites (e.g. laboratories; workshops; mechanical rooms; etc…)
  • Assists in processing hazardous materials or waste from generation sites; verify contents, inventory, sort, weigh, label, and store according to compatibility and hazard class; includes consolidating and bulking material for off-site treatment.
  • Participates in hazardous materials spill response and cleanup. Assists researchers in identifying waste streams and integrating safe practices into their laboratory waste operations.
  • Prepares reports and other documentation that are required to support the University hazardous waste program.
  • Ensures hazardous waste supplies are readily available and in good working order for waste storage areas, including the central accumulation area, labs, and other generation sites.

  • Receives, inspects and coordinates hazardous material shipments from central receiving to the laboratories.

Physical Activities
Working Conditions Other - Able to carry 50 lbs., walk extensively, and be medically approved to wear chemical protective clothing including respirators. Must be reachable and accessible for emergencies during work and off-hours via phone and email.
