Job Summary
Assist the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Assistant Director with implementation of the chemical environmental management/inventory system, laboratory safety, hazardous waste management, respirator protection, etc. to support the University’s Chemical Safety Programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate, train, and support faculty, staff, and students on the web-based Chemical Environmental Management System (CEMS). 
  • Assist faculty and staff members in managing chemicals in their laboratories and/or facilities. 
  • Track chemical inventories for safety management, waste minimization, emergency preparedness, and generate regulatory reports. 
  • Track Particularly Hazardous Chemicals (Peroxidizable). 
  • Barcode chemicals and upload data into the Chemical Environmental Management System (CEMS) for assigned departments. 
  • Perform periodic audits of laboratory chemical inventories. 
  • Develop, revise and implement procedures related to Chemical Environmental Management System (CEMS). 
  • Perform Laboratory Safety Evaluations and facilitate issues resolution. 
  • Report deficiencies to supervisor. Maintain appropriate, accurate and complete documentation and/or records to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies. 
  • Manage the Respiratory Protection Program. 
  • Enroll faculty, staff, and students into the program, conduct hazard assessments, provide training, respiratory medical evaluation information, initial and annual Fit Tests.
  • Perform annual inspection of respirators. 
  • Maintain training and Fit Test documentation and supplies. 
  • Manage Chemical Environmental Management System (CEMS) users accounts. 
  • Facilitate Waste Disposal during Lab Close-Out/Clean-Out or transfer to a new PI.
  • Maintain appropriate, accurate and complete documentation and/or records to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Oversee Toxic and Flammable Gas Alarm Systems in research laboratories and facilities. 
  • Supervise EH&S student-workers in completion of Pending Tasks from laboratories and shops. 
  • Assist with accident/incident/emergency response and investigations as necessary.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties and assist other personnel in EH&S projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in applied or basic Science (i.e., Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or other related science) with three (3) years of chemical safety related experience. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental, or other related science. 
  • Three (3) years of experience with laboratory chemical management in a higher education and/or research environment. 
  • Good working knowledge of chemical safety and laboratory safety protocols. 
  • Advanced knowledge of chemical names and synonyms.
  • Advanced knowledge of EH&S software management. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Good working knowledge of chemical safety and laboratory safety protocols. 
  • Knowledge of chemical names and synonyms. 
  • Project management skills with the ability to organize and effectively coordinate multiple tasks, with good follow-through. 
  • Ability to work independently or with small groups with limited direct supervision. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to take directions. 
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to complete all physical tasks as needed. 
Other Requirements
  • Ability to obtain/maintain 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification.
  • Ability to pass the Respiratory Medical Evaluation to wear a respirator.
  • This job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the state in which the person currently resides. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
