Job Summary
The Safety Specialist will act as a safety support liaison to campus academic labs and associated faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and students. The Safety Specialist will work with various interdisciplinary departments across campus, to include but is not limited to Engineering, Natural Sciences, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Interdisciplinary Studies, and the Arts. The Safety Specialist must be able to develop and maintain strong collaborative and professional relationships with faculty and other University support personnel while actively promoting a culture of safety.
The Safety Specialist conducts safety performance evaluations and lab hazard assessments for academic laboratories and applicable academic support facilities. The Safety Specialist prepares and provides timely safety review reports and assists in and monitors corrective actions, as necessary. The Safety Specialist will advise faculty and staff on safety review findings, and provide appropriate recommendations based on regulatory compliance and best practices. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Minimum Education and Experience
BS in a related field. Three (3) or more years of related experience or a combination of education and experience. Should have the ability to carry 50 lbs. and walk extensively. Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
Preferred Education and Experience
Preferred Education:
MS in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety & Health, Chemistry, Engineering, Biology or other relevant field.
Preferred Experience:
  • Teaching experience in the STEM fields (secondary or post-secondary).
  • Lab management and safety management experience in a University laboratory.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • An understanding and working knowledge of policies and procedures at the University of Texas at Dallas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conducts laboratory safety performance evaluations and risk assessments and advises teaching faculty and staff to meet compliance standards and to prevent injuries/illnesses.
  • Maintains and updates records of laboratory safety performance evaluations and · correspondence; conducts follow-up with laboratories, as necessary.
  • Supports the university laboratory coat program and help oversee student worker staff.
  • Participates as part of the Safety team to provide expertise in the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, control, and prevention of workplace hazards.
  • Creates, edits and updates laboratory training materials and conducts training classes, as necessary.
  • Proactively engages and assists teaching faculty and staff in preparing and updating standard operating procedures and policies and integrating safety into laboratory operations.
  • Identify, build and maintain safety programs for student organizations.
  • Responds to laboratory emergencies and incident investigations.
  • Prepares reports and other documentation that are required to support the University safety program.
  • Maintains proficiency in regulations, standards, guidelines, and trends in laboratory safety.
  • Must be fluent with hazardous waste procedures and assist with hazardous waste disposal, as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.
