Purpose

To provide technical knowledge in the operation and support of safety programs in compliance with regulatory guidelines and institutional policies.


Responsibilities

  • Implements, manages and monitors safety programs, policies, and procedures that meet OSHA and applicable requirements. Evaluates the organization's procedures, facilities and equipment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe conditions and to implement safeguards and solutions. Conducts monthly safety meetings with the divisions about policies and procedures.
  • Investigates incidents and injuries. Provides recommendations to eliminate or minimize potential for injury and evaluates the effectiveness of implemented recommendations. Provide proactive response to FS employee safety concerns.
  • Primary Facilities Services contact for confined space entry operations. May serve as Entry Attendant providing confined space hazard evaluations. Submit confined space evaluation documentation to ArcGIS application established by TRECS Confined Space database. Facilities Services locations complete.
  • May serve on committees and sub‐committees including the campus: Confined Space, Bloodborne Pathogens, Respiratory Protection, Fall Protection and Hot Work Program committees. Serves on the FS Communications Committee.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and daily/annual calibration of Occupational Health Industrial Hygiene equipment to include: multi‐gas detectors used for confined space entry, noise dosimeters, chlorine and toxic gas detectors, and photo ionization detector. Replace nonfunctioning components.
  • Responsible subject matter expert for FS Training, providing curriculum development and video subject demonstrations for UT Learn safety modules. Provides New Employee Orientation as required. Provides Lockout/Tagout Awareness and Confined Space Entry training.
  • Completes annual chemical inventory for all FS Zones to include Safety Data Sheet updates and replacements, training. Chemical disposal liaison with EHS.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering, a natural science, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or a related field. Minimum two years of experience in the environmental health and safety or a related field. 


Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering, a natural science, industrial hygiene, environmental science and, professional Certification, such as: ASP/CSP. Experience in safety working for an institution of higher education.


Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.


Salary Range

$52,000 + depending on qualifications

Additional Working Conditions:

  • This position and associated job duties have been designated as essential during extraordinary and emergency situations when the university is closed. Essential personnel must maintain contact with their supervisor and report to work as regularly scheduled unless directed otherwise.
  • Required to operate an electronic device such as an iPhone, iPad, or laptop/desktop computer to perform and fulfill time reporting and work management requirements. Work management requirements include receiving work assignments, updating work orders, and other functions as required.
  • May be exposed to loud noise, high dust and allergen levels.
  • Drive University vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.


Work Shift

  • 40 Hour Work Week Schedule; Monday-Friday, hours will vary between 08:00 AM – 08:00 PM. Must be willing and able to work on-site during normal business hours and be available, on occasion, after hours.
