Job Description

ASU's Environmental Health and Safety is looking to hire an experienced Safety Partner to organize and conduct consultations of chemistry, hazardous materials, processes, safety compliance and monitoring activities to ensure the safety of the university community. This position will be assigned to the School of Molecular Sciences for providing consultation and guidance, conducting audits of equipment, facilities and machinery for compliance with federal, state, and university. Conducting trainings, data management and addressing issues and suggesting remediation steps or improvements. Analyzes accident patterns and determines appropriate action to reduce or eliminate hazard. Advises and consults with all university management levels regarding EHS and loss control programs to help them comply with regulations. Responds to emergency alarms or calls (e.g., fire, chemical spills)investigating area or situation under alarm; gathers facts and decides what action to be taken to resolve or correct problems. Serves as a technical advisor.

Essential Duties

  • Conducts site visits to audit, provide consultation and inspections of university facilities using hazardous materials including: biological, chemical, lasers, and radiological materials, to ensure compliance with federal, state, local regulations, codes, and university requirements.
  • Maintain and continue to develop an up-to-date understanding of chemistry, biochemistry, and hazardous waste.
  • Develops and implements consultation programs and sustainability activities to support university goals.
  • Interprets and ensures effectiveness of specific methodology and key performance indicators for the department including the effectiveness of safety education.
  • Trains staff to take measurements and prepares required reports for tracking, decision-making and/or compliance requirements.
  • Communicates with customers on safety-related matters in collaboration with Sr. Safety Partners.
  • Reviews, interprets and evaluates compliance activities and policies to ensure safety and recommends and/or implements required safety changes.
  • Provides guidance to stakeholders to ensure the safe handling of hazardous materials, including biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive materials.
  • Establishes procedures and trains other employees in how to manage data and operate specialized equipment, such as devices used for gas detection, mercury vapor analysis, and radiation detection.
  • Operates specialized equipment used for gas detection, mercury vapor analysis, and radiation detection.
  • Leads special studies and project teams as required by supervisor.
  • Creates and maintains safety databases using various information systems or user-specific software.
  • Conducts accident investigations and recommends solutions and best practices by communicating verbally or in writing with the stakeholder.
  • Serves as liaison with subject matter experts in the development and facilitation of high impact training materials and participates in logistics planning, communication and marketing.
  • Reviews accuracy of reports for environmental and safety programs ensuring federal, state, and local regulatory requirements are satisfied. Serves as a member of the department emergency response team and participates in emergency drills and actual emergencies.
  • Stays abreast of current and proposed changes in federal, state and industry regulations and requirements.
  • Drives Arizona State University leased, owned or rented vehicles and carts to various ASU locations to perform work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in physical sciences and four (4) years of related experience Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. 


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Program Management.
  • Experience with the following: developing, implementing and managing safety programs regarding biosafety, chemical, lasers, radiation and riskassessments.
  • Chemistry, biochemistry and hazardous waste knowledge
  • Experience conducting audits, advising stakeholders and conducting training.
  • Evidence of Certification: Associate Safety Professional (ASP).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local, state, and federal/regulations for hazardous materials/waste and environmental sampling.
  • Experience with chemical spill response
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER training

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse (75 percent); required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distance to perform work (10 percent).
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (15 percent).
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Works in indoor and outdoor environments that may include extreme weather conditions; hot in summer and cold in winter.
  • Position might require the use of hearing protection
  • Position might work with hazardous agents
  • Participates in respiratory protection program; assists with respiratory fit testing and training.
  • Participates in ASU medical surveillance programs, which may include vaccinations.
  • Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment
