GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH) is a consortium among IIT, FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), and the food industry. The Moffett Campus houses IIT scientists, faculty and staff and FDA scientists of CFSAN’s Division of Food Processing Science and Technology physically co-located in the building. IFSH is a unique and one-of-a-kind institute in the nation where FDA, academia and the industry join forces and conduct research in a neutral ground to address major national food safety and nutrition issues. This includes BSL 2 & 3 laboratories, GMP certified space and pilot plant capabilities. The position of Safety/Biosafety Officer will lead the safety and biosafety programs at the Institute for Food Safety and Health.
COMMUNICATIONS
Strong written, electronic, and verbal communication skills with FDA and IFSH/IIT stakeholders, internally and externally.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
Provides customer service in support of staff and scientists at IIT and FDA.

Qualifications


Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree (preferred) or higher in Food Science, Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry, Engineering or related field with 5 or more years of safety management with a preference towards BSL3 level experience, or equivalent credentials.
Knowledge & Skills
Requires exceptional project management skills; ability to work autonomous as well as with others; leadership skills; ability to handle confidential and sensitive information; organizational skills and multi-tasking. Advanced computer skills including MS Office, SharePoint, Zoom, Acrobat and/or Canvas etc. Willing to learn other software as needed.
SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY
This is an individual contributor role that works independently with minimal guidance while working closely with other IIT IFSH scientists, and daily interactions with FDA scientists.

Key Responsibilities


Key Responsibility
  • Implement, train and enforce IFSH Safety/Biosafety Policy. Chair/co-chair IFSH Safety Committee, lead annual review of all safety policies, and write new safety policies as necessary, and lead COVID safety efforts.
  • Responsible for conducting annual safety refresher training, new employee/student safety training, and annual facilities team safety training.
  • Responsible for running annual internal safety inspections for Moffett.
  • Manage safety-related compliance/inspection such as fire extinguisher inspections, AED inspections, fire alarm and sprinkler inspections, OSHA compliance issues, etc.
  • Responsible for required annual EPA EPCRA Tier II reporting and RCRA training. Serve as part of Emergency Response team for IFSH, maintain Emergency Contact lists and protocols, and lead & document annual safety drills.
  • Investigate and report accidents and safety incidents.
  • Responsible for required annual EPA Potentially Infectious Medical Waste reporting. Maintain DOT & IATA training & certification for Dangerous Goods shipping.

Key Responsibility
Manage and support the Select Agent program. Includes serving as point of contact for CDC inspection and annual FBI Weapons of Mass Destruction Discussion, implementing IFSH Respiratory Protection Plan in relation to select agent work (fit testing/health testing for BSL3/4 suits), implementing Select Agent annual training, and executing and documenting drills to comply with CDC FSAP guidelines.

Key Responsibility
Manage BSL3 lab and bio-containment pilot plant certifications. Work closely with external contractors and IFSH facilities team to manage and implement preventive maintenance, improvements, and general functionality of 91E with the ultimate goal of maintaining BSL3 certification and compliance with the Federal Select Agent Program (FSAP) guidelines for Select Agent work. Hands on work may be required depending on the task (i.e., ensuring Effluent Decontamination System (EDS) functionality and performance).
