The Small Animal Hospital is looking for a Veterinary Anesthesia Technician II for Orthopedics, under general supervision, to provide clinical support to veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of primary patient care and anesthesia services.

Essential Personnel: May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends and on-call duty. Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.

Other Requirements or Factors - Ability to work around animals hay or dust. Ability to lift heavy loads. Provide quality customer service to internal and external customers/clients.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

  • Four years technical experience in veterinary medicine, anesthesia, or related field

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills

  • Working knowledge of veterinary anesthetic machines and multi parameter monitors

  • Able to work within time constraints.

  • Knowledge of injectable and inhalant anesthesia agents

  •  Able to appropriately handle and restrain feline and canine patients with methods that are both fear free and/or feline friendly

  • Familiar with surgical positioning for feline and canine orthopedic surgical procedures

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  •  Ability to communicate professionally, effectively, and positively with all individuals in a veterinary medical teaching hospital setting

  • Basic knowledge of canine and feline anatomy and physiology

  • Demonstrates knowledge of medical math

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science, or a related area

  • Specialty training in small animal anesthesia and/or small animal orthopedic surgery or related area


Preferred Licenses and Certifications: 

  • Successful completion of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)

  • Current License as Veterinary Technician and continuing education hours necessary to maintain license

  • Basic & Advanced CPR certification through RECOVER

  • Active specialization through Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia and Analgesia

  • (AVTAA) and/or Certificate Course in Principle Techniques of Small Animal Anesthesia, Perioperative Analgesia & Critical Care

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  •  Advanced understanding of veterinary anesthesia machines and anesthetic inhalants

  •  Advanced knowledge of terminology associated with veterinary anesthesia and surgery

  •  Advanced knowledge of local and regional blocks used for analgesia

  •  Advanced knowledge in interpretation of ECG, blood pressure, EtCOZ, and Sp02 readings in the canine and feline patient

  •  Advanced knowledge of basic and advanced CPR for canine and feline patients

Responsibilities:

  • Anesthesia responsibilities - Under supervision, instructs senior veterinary students, veterinary technicians, and veterinary assistants with an emphasis on clinical anesthesia techniques and orthopedic surgical principles. Instructs and assists students in designing anesthetic protocols and ensures clinicians approval. Performs and assists with simple intravenous catheterization techniques, and the administration of pre-medicants, induction agents, inhalant anesthetics, and appropriate analgesics. Assists with surgical procedures, to include proper clipping and aseptic surgical site preparation. Monitors and assists in anesthesia recovery techniques. Reviews Anesthetic records for accuracy and completeness. given on Anesthesia Records. Performs and instructs regional blocks with/without immediate supervision. Recognizes cardiac arrhythmias and seeks guidance. Recognizes and treats perioperative pain. 

  • Clinical responsibilities  - Assists faculty, residents, interns, and students with patient care. Ensures that all charges generated from Anesthesia Services are captured and correctly entered into the hospital electronic medical records system. Provides physical restraint for safe handling of canine and feline patients. Records or assists students in recording the patient's physiological data and all medications. Assist with orthopedic patient receiving as needed. Assist with administration of sedation, patient monitoring, and transport. Assist with patient position for radiologic exam. Gather and prepare all necessary supplies for procedures. Performs and instructs basic soft padded bandages. Prepares various samples for diagnostic testing. Assist in general patient husbandry. 

  • Maintain equipment and service area - Ensures that the proper equipment is available to facilitate patient care. Maintains and operates patient monitoring equipment. Ensures annual calibration of anesthetic vaporizers. Assess and solves anesthetic machine problems as necessary. Arranges and/or obtains quotes for maintenance and/or repairs. Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service area. Restocks medical inventory as needed. Cleans and repackages items for sterilization specific to the service area. Provides infectious disease control and sanitation activities to ensure a consistently clean working environment. 

  • Required training, compliance, and administrative procedures  -Assists and facilitates teaching and mentorship of new employees. Delegates tasks to student workers. Assist with cross training of current employees. Maintains all required training in appropriate time frame. Follow hospital policy and procedures. Remains current with Rabies prophylaxis and titer checks. Keeps personal credentials and/or certifications up to date. Assist hospital in maintaining accreditations and certifications; AHAA, AVMA, AALAC, IACUC, Feline Friendly, etc. Performs duties as assigned as an essential employee of VMTH.
