Wayne State University is searching for an experienced S2336 University Counselor I at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

The Academic Persistence Specialist will work closely with students navigating academic probation by facilitating their journey toward academic success and overall personal development. The Academic Persistence Specialist will co-develop a customized academic success plan with each student, which will include support from their campus connections such as academic advisors and success coaches. This plan will outline individualized academic goals, improvement strategies, and bolster their confidence in their academic capabilities. The successful candidate will bring experience in the areas of coaching, mentoring, and administrative skills to assist students in overcoming challenges and achieving their academic goals.

Responsibilities:
Individual Student Support:
Conduct one-on-one Academic Rebound meetings with students on academic probation to assess their academic performance, identify challenges, and set SMART goals
Provide personalized academic coaching and mentorship to help students develop effective study habits, time management skills, and academic resilience
Collaborate with students to create individualized academic rebound plans and monitor progress over time

Workshop Development and Facilitation:
Develop and conduct outreach workshops on academic skills, goal setting, time management, and other topics relevant to academic success
Organize and facilitate group sessions to foster a sense of community among students facing academic challenges
Design and distribute educational materials to support workshops and individual academic rebound sessions

Collaboration with Academic Advisors:
Liaise with academic advisors to stay informed about academic policies, course requirements, and available resources for students
Collaborate with academic advisors to create seamless support structures for students on probation, ensuring a holistic approach to student success
Maintain regular communication with the Advisor Training Academy to ensure campus advisors remain current on the Academic Persistence Program’s mission, offerings, and successes

Campus Resource Connections:
Connect students with appropriate campus resources, such as tutoring services, counseling, and other academic support offerings
Collaborate with campus partners to ensure a comprehensive support network for students on academic probation


Unique duties:
Qualifications:

Master's degree in counseling, higher education, social work, or a related field
Experience working with college students, particularly those experiencing academic challenges
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Knowledge of academic support strategies and learning development theories
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information
Experience working with students with disabilities is preferred
