Job Summary

Directly reporting to the Metabolomics Team Leader (R&D Engineer Supervisor 2), this candidate will apply Chemistry skills supporting the technical application on multiple funded projects. They will be an active participant and engaged in all phases of the research project. They will also work with other lab personnel (staff, postdocs, students) to contribute to other funded projects.

This candidate will use gold standard and novel analytical instrumentation to analyze chemical, biological, and environmental samples, with an emphasis on identifying biomarkers of health states, or measuring chemical abundances. They will draft reports for review and presentation to funding agencies, assist with preparing manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals, provide support to graduate students and supervision to undergraduate students.

The researcher will contribute to overall operations of the laboratory, inventory management of equipment maintenance, lab meeting participation, and assistance with engineering advice to lab colleagues.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Physical Demands: Manual dexterity/mechanical skills to install, test, make modifications on instrument and sensor platforms. Position may require the ability to lift/maneuver up to 50 lbs. of parts or equipment. Extended use of a computer. Standing for multiple hours at a time

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·       The research time per week is estimated to be 40 hours, although schedule changes can be agreed upon due to special needs of the individual research project, and individual researcher availability. Flexibility in working hours as required by experimental and data analysis procedures. Work in an environment with chemical, biological, and radiological hazards. Work in a busy, active laboratory environment and interact with personnel from different academic disciplines and cultural backgrounds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related discipline with working knowledge of analytical chemistry principles and methods to complete assignments.

·       2+ years implementing experiments that solve specific research problems, such as sample preparation, instrumental analysis, and analyzing results.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       2+ years knowledge of mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, and liquid chromatography topics related to biomarker discovery from environmental or biological sources with sensor systems.

·       Theoretical knowledge in analytical chemistry with a strong focus on analytical instrumentation.

·       Effective written and verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on data recordkeeping.

·       Ability to work in a collaborative, diverse environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Knowledge of biomedical, chemical, or engineering topics with previous instrument design experience.

·       2+ years’ experience with differential mobility spectrometry (DMS).

·       2+ years’ experience with thermal desorption techniques, especially Gerstel MPS2 and TDU-CIS systems.

·       Prior experience collecting samples in field settings, such as greenhouses, agricultural fields, clinical settings, and from the environment.

·       Author or co-author on publications in internationally known peer-reviewed journals, and in oral presentations.
