Research Internship - Recycling of Aerospace Metals

The Engineering department at the Roux Institute is seeking a research intern to help with an experimental investigation into the recycling of metal machine shop wastes to feedstock powders used in metal 3D printing.  This NASA-funded project is performed in collaboration with small payload launch provider bluShift Aerospace, who will use these powders to 3D print components of their rockets.  We'll utilize a novel milling strategy to breakdown bluShift's metal scraps to usable powders, and then characterize their composition, size, shape and vet their 3D printability. The research intern will gain insights into sustainable manufacturing, 3D printing, aerospace engineering, and experimental research investigations.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the experimental investigation of recycling metal machine shop wastes for feedstock powder production
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the novel milling strategy
  • Demonstrate 3D printability of milled powder feedstocks using cold spray additive manufacturing
  • Conduct characterization analysis of the produced powders, including composition, size, and shape
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the successful implementation of the project
  • Contribute to the dissemination and communication of research findings to varied audiences
  • Travel to adjacent Roux facilities in nearby Scarborough, ME is required, and options for carpooling are available.
  • Occasional daytrips to Northeastern’s laboratory facilities on the Burlington, MA campus

Qualifications
  • No particular degree experience is required
  • Experience working in a laboratory setting
  • Demonstrated interest in either sustainable manufacturing, mechanical or materials engineering, 3D printing or related.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team

Application Materials
  • A resume and cover letter detailing your interest and qualifications for the position.
  • Please provide the names of at least two mentors/supervisors or senior colleagues who will be able to provide (upon request) letters of recommendation.
