Roofer/Sheet Metal Mechanic, Facilities Management - Main Campus - Georgetown University 

Full-time: 40 hours

Pay: $26.48 per hour

Location: Main Campus, 3700 “O” Street, Washington, DC

Job Overview

The Roofer/Sheet Metal Mechanic has responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

  • Maintains and repairs all types of roofs as part of the services provided to the University community by the facilities management area to maintain university buildings
  • Performs maintenance and repair of slate, tin, copper, hot tar, rubber and shingle roofs; as well as gutters, downspouts and sheet metal work
  • Lays out and fabricates of duct lines, drip pans, metal louvers, etc. from flat sheet metal
  • Fabricates and installs items made of special metals such as ornaments, murals and cornice work
  • Performs journey level maintenance and repairs in accordance with industry/trade practices
  • Performs assignments in response to requests for service, scheduled preventive maintenance inspections, and unscheduled or special projects
  • Uses all standard tools, equipment, materials and supplies of the trade, and observes all safety rules, regulations and precautions in performing duties
  • Operates various high reach machines

Work Interactions

Reporting directly to the Building and Structures Supervisor, along with one other roofer/sheet metal worker, 3 locksmiths, 3 carpenters, one mason and a trades helper, the Roofer/Sheet Metal Mechanic works with tradesmen of other areas within the department to complete assigned tasks as necessary.  As well, they work with other members of the Facilities Management area and the university faculty, staff and students in perform work conducted on campus facilities, ensuring a comfortable, safe and clean environment in which all can live, learn and work.

Performs cooperative and collaborative work with fellow employees, assuring that work is completed on time and within specified guidelines.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency         
  • 5 years of experience working with residential and commercial roofing systems, to include slate roofs
  • 5 years of experience fabricating and installing all types of sheet meal, to include duct work, metal louvers, drip pans, guttering and down spouts
  • General knowledge of soldering and welding
  • Completion of apprenticeship or equivalent training in the roofing trade
  • Possession of a valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia driver’s license

Preferred qualifications

Basic computer literacy and working knowledge of Windows 95
