The Nurse oversees specific research studies and works from an office where they manage a database of research participants and a list of potential research participants. In addition, the Nurse reviews potential participant’s records to determine if they meet research protocol requirements. The RN enrolls qualifying and consenting candidates into studies. There is a clinical aspect to most Research Nurse roles. The Nurse performs related clinical skills such as collecting data, taking vital signs, administering drugs, noting any side effects and other like duties as assigned.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patients; documents, collects data, and assists physicians.
  • Works with staff to identify, screen, and enroll study subjects; ensures lab and data are obtained according to established protocol.
  • Trains and supervises staff assigned to work on the research project.
  • Coordinates handling of specimens, administration of clinical trials, collection of source information, and case reporting.
  • Prepares/submits event reports in adherence with study procedures, budget, and established guidelines.
  • Assists research associates from sponsoring organization, providing study explanations and reports as necessary.
  • Authorizes payments to ancillary organizations for services received and accounts for payments from organization serviced.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clinical research certification.
  • Two years of experience in an academic research setting.
  • One to three years of experience in gynecologic oncology.
  • Working knowledge of techniques and methodologies used in developing, coordinating, and managing clinical research projects with working knowledge of database management.
  • Clinical research experience or knowledge regarding research protocols is highly preferred.
  • Attention to detail and able to easily work within databases.
  • Prefers working autonomously and managing volumes.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with two years of related nursing or research experience.
  • REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current RN licensure in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois, depending on location. Basic Life Support Certification. Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements.

Salary Range
$58,400.00 - $101,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
