The International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant provides care to infants and mothers of infants in the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Jacobs Medical Center as well as the Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Hillcrest Medical Center. They are an integral part of our Baby-Friendly designation and active participants in upholding the superb quality outcomes of our neonates. Opportunities for team collaboration include the California Children's Services (CCS) weekly neonatal multidisciplinary team conferences for discharge planning and Supporting Premature Infant Nutrition (SPIN) program. Quality contributions include breastfeeding rates, nutrition and skin to skin holding, as reported to California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC). This individual will serve as an inpatient liaison to the UC Health Milk Bank.

The lactation consultant is a member of the Women & Infants Services team. They serve as subject matter experts regarding breastfeeding, milk production, policies and supplies and equipment. Lactation consultants support maintaining evidence-based practices through participation in policy development and quality improvement initiatives. They provide education and support to families, patients and staff.

Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.


This position is required to work at both Jacobs Medical Center and Hillcrest Medical Center.

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited school of Nursing.

  • RN License issued by the State of California.

  • BART or BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six months of hire date.

  • NRP certification.

  • IBCLC Certification within 6-months of hire.

  • Minimum two (2) years of recent Lactation RN experience. (If insufficient applicant pool, department may consider applicants with less than 2 years).

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage multiple levels of information and responsibilities, and to quickly assess moderately-complex problems to develop potential solutions.

  • Ability to perform triage and handle critical and/or urgent situations with accuracy, expediency andspeed, and tact.

  • Strong professionalism and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, physicians, patients and external constituents, both verbally and in writing.

  • BSN.
  • Two years RN experience in postpartum or neonatal intensive care unit.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Experience working in a baby friendly designated hospital.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Experience with data collection and presentation.
  • Demonstrated experience with quality improvement projects.
  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and various locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $170,485 - $170,485 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $81.65 - $81.65

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
