Position Summary
Position is responsible for coordinating the care of patients for a designated service throughout the continuum of care. Serves as a clinical resource in area of specialty or expertise. Provides support to the division faculty and non-physician providers both in the clinical and academic settings.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Provides both direct and indirect patient care including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patients. 

  • Responsible for attending physician office sessions of division providers.
  • Performs interview of patient and family as indicated by the division providers. 
  • Completes health history of patient and conveys findings to provider of care.
  • Patient care to include medication administration, access of central lines and ports, obtaining and evaluating vital signs, feeding tube management, and dressing / wound care. Documents care in the patient medical record.
  • Responsible for telephone prescription / DME refills as order by provider.

Coordinates patient care, orders diagnostic and laboratory tests, conveys findings to physician, coordinates patient appointments and assists with referrals to outside sources.

  • Attends division conference weekly.
  • Attends division pathology conference weekly.
  • Works with division personnel to coordinate GI specific diagnostic procedures and treatments.

Prepares equipment and assists providers with examinations, treatments, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care as requested by division providers and allowed by Missouri Practice Standards for a registered nurse.

Performs a variety of nursing administrative duties including compliance with environmental safety regulations, infection control standards and quality assurance, billing and compliance, and HIPAA guidelines.

Acts as liaison and team leader by facilitating communication and coordination of care between patients, families and health team members. Explains routines and procedures to patients and coordinates patient care information to appropriate sources.

  • Responsible for explaining diagnostic procedures and associated preps if applicable.
  • Responsible for conveying to patients their lab, pathology, and ancillary testing results. Provides patient/ family education as necessary.
  • Responsible for telephone prescription / DME refills as order by provider.
  • Provides direct oversight to physician office flow.
  • Responsible for keeping providers apprised of schedule changes, room utilization, ensuring that office flow is efficient. Expectations include performing turnover of exam rooms, obtaining patient height, weight, and head circumference. Documents findings in patient’s growth chart.
  • Reviews providers billing / charge tickets ensuring that all necessary elements are present and documented for accurate billing and collections.

Job Location / Working Conditions

Medical office environment within a teaching institution. Patient care delivered in the physician office setting at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and other Washington University clinic locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Remains consistent with current practice in specialty.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with two years of nursing experience.
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois, depending on location, in accordance with the Compact Act.
  • Basic Life Support Certification or obtains certification within one month of employment. Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements.

Salary Range
$59,600.00 - $103,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
