ROLE of the POSITION

The English Language Center ("ELC") at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas ("UNLV") invites creative, energetic, compassionate leaders who are qualified candidates to apply for the position at the level of Associate Director or Director of the English Language Center ("ELC Leader" / "Associate Director or/Director").

Reporting to the Executive Director of International Student and Scholar Services ("Executive Director"), the ELC Leader is responsible for overseeing all functions of the ELC, including administration and budget, student advising, placement, teaching, assessment, and curriculum development in the Intensive English Program, credit-bearing English language courses, and short-term programs. The ELC Leader develops new innovative courses and curriculum, focusing on project-based learning, communicative language teaching, English for Academic Purposes, English for Specific Purposes, and language and culture immersion experiences to enrich learning.

The ELC Leader teaches one class per semester (two courses per year) and serves as a curriculum resource guide for faculty. The ELC Leader works to foster among the ELC faculty a culture of sharing and experimentation in teaching and learning. The ELC Leader oversees all ELC staff and faculty, leads the hiring, training and evaluation process, and provides mentorship and teaching development opportunities.

The ELC Leader is responsible for establishing and managing a new innovative language and culture immersion programming space that will be an integral part of the ELC and include academic support, social connectivity-including a homestay program as an embedded culture and language experience for all international students. The ELC Leader also contributes to planning new campus support services to UNLV's international and multilingual students, and occasionally to multilingual staff and faculty.

The ELC Leader at the Associate Director-level works in close coordination with the Executive Director.

The ELC Leader at the Director-level works independently to achieve the stated goals. The ELC Director is also responsible for leading the ELC's strategic planning, including strategic financial planning, curriculum planning, market research, and recruitment strategy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires the following qualifications and experience for each position level:

Associate Director: Minimum of 5 years total experience in the English language teaching field that includes at minimum 2 years of language program administration and supervisory leadership experience plus a minimum of 3 years teaching English to speakers of other languages in a higher education setting. Master's degree in TESOL; or, a TESOL Certificate with a Master's degree in a related field (second language acquisition, applied linguistics, curriculum and instruction or related field) from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Demonstrated experience with course design, materials writing, and curriculum development. 3-5 years supervisory experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.

Director: Minimum of 8 years total experience in the English language teaching field that includes at minimum 5 years of language program administration and supervisory leadership experience plus a minimum of 3 years teaching English to speakers of other languages in a higher education setting. Master's degree in TESOL; or, a TESOL Certificate plus a Master's degree in a related field (second language acquisition, applied linguistics, curriculum and instruction or related field) from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Demonstrated experience with course design, materials writing, and curriculum development. 5-7 years supervisory experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral degree in TESOL or related field (second language acquisition, applied linguistics, curriculum and instruction or related field)
  • Experience living and working internationally
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching first-year composition classes and composition for multilingual writers documented in course evaluations in a higher-education setting
  • Demonstrated effective and creative use of technology for online teaching and assessment.
  • Robust record of contributions to the field, including conference presentations and active participation in professional development and associations.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching English to speakers of other languages in a variety of context and levels
  • Demonstrated experience with language program administration and managerial experience in TESOL settings
  • Demonstrated experience with course design and curriculum development
  • Experience providing academic support services 
  • Demonstrated effective leadership
  • Familiarity with requirements and specific needs of international and domestic students
  • Ability to effectively navigate federal, state and local regulations, as well as campus and system wide policies and procedures 
  • Active membership in professional organizations (e.g. TESOL, NAFSA) and evidence of knowledge of the latest innovations and developments in the field
  • Demonstrated experience with online education
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse groups of students/staff
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with members of staff and with other university units 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop positive working relationships with university administration, staff, faculty, students, and external parties
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of admission and enrollment, financial planning, student support, development and training of faculty, human resource issues, and facilities management
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence and support for diversity initiatives
