The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA), located in Des Moines, IA, is seeking a qualified candidate to join our State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) as a Review Archeologist.

This position provides archaeological expertise on review and compliance projects for the SHPO. The Review Archeologist utilizes knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Archaeology and Historic Preservation, and the Association of lowa Archaeologists Guidelines on Archaeological Investigations in Iowa to provide services to stakeholders across the state.

General Duties:

Provides archaeology review of submitted projects:

  • Reviews proposed project documents, including environmental impact statements and environmental assessments, which have been submitted by federal agencies or their agents
  • Identifies federal compliance responsibilities from information provided by federal agencies on proposed projects
  • Considers and communicates effects that may occur to archaeological and historic properties as a result of project implementation
  • Uses historic property inventories, property location maps, and a broad knowledge of lowa history to determine need to conduct archaeological, or historic surveys and to evaluate historic properties for significance
  • Formulates and provides recommendations to agencies and developers establishing the State Historical Preservation Office's (SHPO) opinion of project effect and how to avoid affecting historic properties; advises agencies on legal responsibilities under Federal and State preservation laws
  • Responds to inquiries and provides guidance, clarification and recommendations concerning historic preservation compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966
  • Provides technical review and assistance for historic sites.

The ideal candidate will have a master's degree in History, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Public History, Art History, Architecture, Urban Planning, Anthropology, Archaeology, or other closely related field and have experience working with all phases of archaeological surveys, historic property identification and evaluation, Section 106 and National Historic Preservation Act policy review, and/or the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The ideal candidate will also be a Secretary of Interior qualified archaeologist.

The Review Archeologist position is a non-merit, non-contract covered position that is classified by the State of Iowa as a Historic Program Specialist. This position is exempt (salaried) per FLSA regulations.

As a non-merit position, candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this

job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in history, anthropology, archeology, architecture, curatorial/museum management, literature, English, art, natural history, architectural history, library science, or historic preservation, and experience equal to one year of full-time work in professional research, museum, education, editing, or other experience associated with history, anthropology, archaeology, architecture, architectural history, art, museums, historic sites, or historic preservation.

2) A total of five years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in history, anthropology, archeology, architecture, curatorial/museum management, literature, English, art, natural history, architectural history, library science, or historic preservation equals one year of full-time experience.
