Description of Work Unit
A broad spectrum of support for Facilities Operation is provided by licensed engineers and staff. The scope of engineering services includes: studies, problem investigation, field evaluation, analysis, and corrective or replacement design and construction documents with project or construction management as necessary.
Position Summary
This position is for an Engineer with experience in commissioning or retrocommissioning. As an Engineer, this person is expected to have a minimum of two years of commissioning or retrocommissioning experience but she/he does not need to be currently registered as a Professional Engineer. This position works under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Engineering & Capital Construction but will work with all architects, engineers, project managers, and Operations staff in Facilities Management.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering which must have been obtained from an ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), Engineering program.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
  • And Minimum two years of building commissioning or retro-commissioning experience.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • A good understanding of the operation, troubleshooting and design of building mechanical systems.
  • Ability to run trends and adjust settings in BAS controls.
  • Understanding of the interpretation and application of building codes, including IBC, IPC, IECC and NFPA.
  • Commissioning or retrocommissioning experience with large institutional buildings, lab buildings, high performance buildings, etc.
  • Energy modeling of institutional buildings.
  • Experience with relevant computer programs such as Carrier E20, Trane Trace,.etc.
  • Experience navigating Building Automation Systems (BAS)
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams.

Essential Duties


Job Duty Category Commissioning, Retrocommissioning, HVAC Troubleshooting
Duty/Responsibility
  • Conducts commissioning and retrocommissioning audits on campus buildings. These audits should identify low cost/no cost measures and capital improvements to help the buildings operate more efficiently, improve occupant comfort, reduce utility costs, and achieve performance targets outlined in the new Colorado Building Performance Standards legislation.
  • Work with the Operations and Remodel & Construction Services (RCS) to implement measures where feasible with available resources.
  • Quantify savings and implementation costs for capital measures identified during building audits in order to help prioritize projects to be implemented from the Energy Reserve Fund.
  • Utilize utility database to run reports and perform analysis of energy and water use to help prioritize buildings to target for retrocommissioning.
  • Work with Operations personnel and utilize building automation system (BAS) to run trends to help diagnose building problems and inefficiencies.
  • Conduct testing post-installation to ensure the measures are performing as designed.
  • Ability to conduct Life Cycle Cost comparisons.

  • Evaluate building mechanical energy problems, develop reports and make recommendations to correct problems. When complaints are received from the building users about the mechanical and plumbing systems determine what the issues are and address them. 
  • Install mechanical or plumbing test equipment to monitor the mechanical or plumbing system to determine what the problems are. 
  • Interpret the results of the tests, and make recommendations to correct the problems.
  • Assist Operation Shops with troubleshooting of building mechanical distribution system problems.
