Job Summary/Basic Function
Job Summary:
The Retention Specialist is responsible for assisting first-year students with tailored course planning and goal setting to produce a successful first-year experience. He/She will identify and monitor the academic progress of freshmen at-risk first-year students to ensure they are on the path to academic success. The Retention Specialist will also proactively maintain records for each student, as well as employ effective academic engagement techniques and college and career preparedness strategies to ensure acceptable retention and graduation rates. He/she will collaborate with faculty, counselors, other academically qualified professionals, and university staff to provide resources and interventions that promote student achievement. In addition, the primary goal of the Retention Specialists is to retain current students by purposefully inspiring and strategizing to raise freshman students’ good academic performance. This job resides in the Undergraduate Student Success Center and reports to the Director of First Year Experience & Student Success.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Create a retention plan to increase student success, retention, and graduation rates.
  • Develop an initiative effort for students not registered for upcoming semester.
  • Track and maintain academic progress of incoming students (including retention and success rates)
  • Assist with advising, registering, and monitoring students who have been placed on academic probation.
  • Advise and develop a follow-up system with students who have been identified through the early alert system for excessive absences, unsatisfactory grades, etc.
  • Maintain and/or assist in student bi-weekly progress reports.
  • Prepares written reports and submit electronically of all tasks geared toward the management of retention and persistence efforts to the Director of First Year Experience & Student Success
  • Other duties as assigned or maybe required.

  • Capability to operate a personal computer and a variety of software applications pertinent to the LU Student Success Center

  • Demonstrated organizing and planning skills, including proficiency in follow-up and completion within predetermined time constraints.
  • Capability to integrate new systems and information efficiently.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced atmosphere and exhibit the ability to prioritize several competing projects and demands proficiently.
  • High problem-solving skills and the capacity to examine components and determine a logical plan of action, in addition to awareness of when to seek aid or direction.
  • Exceptional organizational and follow-through skills to ensure assignments are completed within allotted timeframes.
  • Capability to manage sensitive, confidential materials with total discretion; familiarity with HIPPA/FERPA and 504 plans.

Work Environment:
  • Normal work week consists of 40 hours (hours may vary depending on schedule).
  • The work environment entails everyday risks or hassles that necessitate the standard safety procedures characteristic of workplaces, conference rooms, and classrooms.
  • Work in an office setting, interacting with instructors, staff, and students, as well as service providers and vendors.
  • Depending on demand and job objectives, overtime work may be necessary on occasion.

Physical Demands:
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time at a workstation.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, and putting away of Parcels weighing up to 50 lbs.

  • Normal physical agility, which includes the ability to maneuver the body while stationary.

Extent of Public Contact:
  • Extensive internal face-to-face contact, telephone, email, mailing, and other forms of communication with university personnel are required.
  • On a bi-monthly or more frequent basis, interact with faculty, staff, and students, collaborate with other departments on campus.
