Position Summary
The Washington University School of Medicine Operations & Facilities Management Department provides a range of services for the medical campus in a customer-focused, efficient, and sustainable manner. Operations & Facilities Management maintains 61 university buildings and provides operational, planning, and construction services to over 8.3 million gross square feet of space. We will open three new facilities between 2023 and 2025 with over 1.5M BGSF. In addition, the School of Medicine continues expanding its reach on and off campus in teaching, clinical care, and research. Our team plays a vital and important role in delivering care, research, and services.
Serves as the primary first responder to all life safety and protection of property, emergency and non-emergency incidents on campus. Includes rendering emergency medical assistance or general first aid. Enforces University policy/procedures and criminal law. May be assigned to vehicle, bike or foot patrol. Must be prepared to deal with a variety of complex and ever-changing situations (crisis intervention, apprehension of criminal suspects, serious injuries, et al), make quick decisions and take action. Needs to be able to utilize a variety of tools and techniques to resolve the situations and accurately and thoroughly record information for the official University record.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responds or reacts to emergency and non-emergency incidents (medical, law enforcement, injury/accident, et al.) on campus. When not on assignment, patrols the University properties. Takes action or makes a note for follow-up of any safety and security issues. Provides Emergency Management support during larger-scale incidents.    
  • Receives/compiles information for incident reports and conducts initial and follow-up investigations.
  • Provides necessary follow-up (transports to medical facility, notifies proper authorities, and undertakes any other necessary coordination) for faculty, staff, students, and visitors after immediate resolution of an incident. Apprehends criminal suspects for on-view or reported criminal activity. 
  • May serve as a Field Training Officer or instructor. May fulfill informal leadership duties in the absence of Leads or supervisors.   
  • Conducts building checks which include checking access control devices and door locks and proactively looking for any possible safety or security hazard. Uses problem-solving skills to resolve issues found during building checks. 
  • Assist Medical Center personnel and visitors with directions and provides escorts when requested. Partners with customers in assigned geographical areas and assists them in resolving multi-department issues. 
  • Takes possession of the found property, attempts to locate the owner, and secures property according to established procedure. 
  • Enforces parking regulations and provides support to the Transportation Office as needed.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Criminal Justice, two to three years experience as an armed Security Officer in a professional security organization.
  • Applicable Law enforcement or Military training.
  • Licensed Missouri EMT-B. Certification as Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Member.
  • Obtain and maintain certification for Taser, OC Spray, collapsible baton, and handcuffs.
  • Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Should be advanced in computer skills to complete department incident reports as required.


Required Qualifications

  • One to two years of college or technical school training.
  • Two years’ experience as an armed officer in an academic environment, or civilian or military police setting.
  • Experience may be substituted for formal education and training.

Salary Range
$18.36 - $28.47 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
