The Resident PGY4 engages in a residency education position with the purpose of obtaining an academic affiliated post-graduate educational experience in a controlled academic environment. The incumbent refines and improves skills in all six of the general competencies by providing direct patient care services. Additionally, the Resident PGY4 serves as a liaison between the medical community and the assigned medical facilities. 

JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Defines initial plans of care and determines level of care needed for patients. 2. Assures appropriate evaluation and certification of terminal prognosis.

3. Conducts palliative care consultations and follow up evaluations.

4. Provides medical expertise on pain and symptom management to admission and patient care staff.

5. Consults with attending physicians regarding pain and symptom management and issues involving patient prognosis.

6. Educates community physicians, medical students, residents, and clinical staff on the principles of palliative medicine.

7. Meets with community physicians and healthcare workers to provide education on appropriate referrals.

8. Contributes to the working environment of the department by maintaining a professional atmosphere.

9. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

1. This position is part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Regional Medical Campus Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program located at JFK Medical Center and the West Palm Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Palm Beach County.

2. Evaluate, diagnose, and develop treatment plans for patients with known, with suspected, or at risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

3. Manage patients with acute cardiac conditions.

4. Manage patients with chronic cardiovascular diseases.

5. Appropriately utilize cardiovascular testing.

6. Disease Prevention and Risk Factor Control: implement disease prevention and risk factor control measures, addressing comorbidities.

7. Work effectively to promote patient-centered interdisciplinary team-based care.

8. Gain competence in bedside teaching.

9. Demonstrates the ability for effective problem identification and resolution as well as the exercise of independent judgment.

10. Demonstrates dexterity and competency to perform essential and required procedures and provides complete written documentation of all procedures.

11. Work with ancillary team members to provide high quality, cost effective health care.

12. Demonstrates awareness and applies knowledge of quality control measures and risk management skills.

13. PGY4 Residents, Cardiovascular Disease Fellows, are required to supervise and train junior residents and medical students in clinical tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS       

Education:

All PGY 4 Residents, Cardiovascular Disease Fellows, must have a M.D. or D.O degree.

Certification and Licensing:

ECFMG certification is required for medical degrees obtained outside the United States.

PGY 4 Residents, Cardiovascular Disease Fellows, must maintain a valid training license in the State of Florida throughout the duration of the training program.

PGY 4 Residents, Cardiovascular Disease Fellows, must maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification throughout the duration of the training program.

Experience:

All PGY 4 Residents, Cardiovascular Disease Fellows, must have successfully completed an ACGME accredited Internal Medicine Residency program.
