Resident Advisors are responsible for assisting the Headington Administration in developing, coordinating, and maintaining a positive intellectual, emotional, and social living environment for students. These student staff members are selected based on their display of sensitivity to and interest in people, objectivity, and respect for the worth and dignity of individuals, open-mindedness on issues, degree of empathy, ability to handle autonomy and make decisions, sensitivity to privileged information, and their success within the academic community. Resident Advisors serve as role models, with their primary responsibility being to provide support, encouragement, and leadership to their community. They should be available to their residents and empower them to grow and develop as responsible citizens. Student staff also play a crucial role in establishing a positive living and learning environment and are required to reside within the community they oversee.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT:
Active participation is required in the following:

  • Training: RA training begins in before new students arrive on campus and will require that you return to campus early. It is expected that RAs will be exclusively available for training, including any free time built into the training schedule. RAs are not excused for any other work, athletic, family/friend meetings or commitments during RA training. 
  • Move-in: Move-in occurs immediately following RA training. It is expected that RAs will be exclusively available during this time as the RA training is mandatory
  • Once-a-week staff meetings with your HC, RDs, and the other RAs in your hall. 
  • Bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with your RD.
  • Once a semester one-on-one meeting with your HC.
  • RAs will be assigned to a floor based on the needs of a particular community and the Residence Life program. This assignment could change at any time in the year based on the needs of the community. RAs are expected to be familiar with campus resources and refer residents to the correct resource. Employment is for one academic year. Employment is contingent on successful completion of job responsibilities (including Residential Curriculum) and performance evaluations.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

  • RAs will serve duties as scheduled by your RDs/HC.
  • RAs will perform tasks such as desk shifts, intentional conversations with residents, health and wellness checks, programming, rounds for visitation hours, and holding the duty phone.
  • Individuals or groups violating University of Oklahoma and/or Headington Hall policies will be engaged and reported within the guidelines of the disciplinary system.
  • RAs will enforce all community codes with consistency.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT:

  • Knows all assigned residents personally, builds rapport and spends quality time regularly with all residents
  • Attends community/Student Leadership Association meetings as directed by their supervisor
  • Is available and visible in the community during the evenings and on weekends in order to support students and the community
  • Facilitates leadership development in all residents
  • Knows which residents have disabilities and may need assistance during an emergency, and has communicated that information appropriately
  • Observes general relationships among roommates or members of the community and responds appropriately to problems or conflicts
  • Promotes student involvement in University and Headington Hall community and events
  • Maintains professional boundaries & relationships with the residents of floor and community of Headington Hall 

PROGRAMMING:

  • Attends and promotes activities of the community and across campus and encourages students to attend
  • Encourages development of leadership and programs, especially in their community. Plans and implements programs according to departmental guidelines including but not limited to:
  • Minimum 3 individual programs per semester
  • Group Programming
  • Supports fellow Resident Advisors by participating/attending in their programming when available
  • Fulfill all requirements of the Headington Hall Residential Curriculum 

POLICY ENFORCEMENT:

  • Communicates and interprets University and departmental rules, regulations and community standards (as well as federal, state and local laws) so residents know and understand these policies and the possible consequences for violating them
  • Actively enforces policies by promptly confronting any violations and concerning behavior
  • Participates in duty rotation for building or area as scheduled, whether regularly scheduled or on an emergency or as needed
  • Participates in Night Shift Duty coverage
  • Responds to emergencies as directed 

AMBASSADOR DUTIES:

  • Serve as a tour guide for tours: prospective students/recruits and their families, special events, etc. for daily and impromptu tours
  • Represent the Department at all recruiting events as needed
  • Must live in community for which you are assigned 

TRAINING & IN-SERVICE:

  • Attends all job-related workshops/training (late Spring, August/pre-fall and January, etc.)
  • Attends in-service training (weekly staff meetings, monthly staff developments etc.) set forth by supervisor
  • Accepts no other outside employment without their supervisor’s approval. Outside employment should be limited to 10 hours/week to keep in line with the University’s policy on student employment.

Job Requirements

Required Education: Must be currently enrolled in the SPRING term as a student at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring is contingent upon verification of current student status.


  • Must attach Spring 2024 class schedule.
  • Must plan to enroll in Fall 2024 semester
  • Must have and maintain a 2.7 GPA.

Requirements:

  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holiday
  • Must have lived on campus at least two semesters
  • Must be enrolled or have passed a RA class
  • Maintains the minimum 2.7 GPA (semester and cumulative) necessary to uphold position
  • Is aware of each resident’s individual academic achievement through on-going contact, knows who may have academic/career difficulty, and has knowledge of available resources for academic assistance
  • Promotes and encourages discussion groups, seminars or other programs emphasizing academics
  • Follows NCAA Compliance guidelines regarding student-athlete extra benefits
  • Works collaboratively with Faculty-in-Residence and other academic resources
  • Complies with University’s academic integrity policies 

Compensation:

Room and Board (board provided is the standard equivalent of a 12 meal/ 250 points Meal Plan) during the period of employment when dining services are available (dining services may not be available during some times when staff are required to be on campus—additional meals may not be provided). The Resident Advisor will also receive a monthly stipend in the amount of $275.00. The period of employment is defined as being any time when student staff are required to be on-campus for the fulfillment of their position. Board plans are subject to Housing & Dining Plans. Resident Advisors will also receive student tickets for Men’s Football & Basketball, as well as certain gear from OU Athletics. RA positions are reported to the Office of Financial Aid and may affect aid packages.
