CICOES has an outstanding opportunity for a Research scientist engineer 1 to join their team.

This position is for an entry-level technician in a chemical oceanographic laboratory with a primary research goal of advancing our understanding of biogeochemical cycling in Alaskan waters and across the deep ocean basins. The technician will work with a small team to measure nutrient, oxygen, and chlorophyll levels in seawater in the laboratory and participate on research cruises in extreme environments for extended periods. Duties include setup, operation and maintaining instrumentation for analysis of nutrients, oxygen, and chlorophyll in seawater samples. Laboratory responsibilities include inventory, ordering supplies, and preparing equipment, chemicals, and supplies for research expeditions. Other responsibilities include data and metadata collection/entry, ensuring data quality, and performing preliminary processing. Additional duties may include using and adapting software tools to process, conduct quality control, and merge data; generating data products using programming languages (e.g., Python, Matlab, R); and creating programming scripts to automate and improve data processing and figure generation. Duties at sea include preparing, deploying, and sampling the CTD-rosette system, overseeing seawater sample collection, operating instrumentation for analysis of seawater samples, and helping other research teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

65% - Laboratory analysis of nutrient levels in seawater including preparing reagents and standards, operating a nutrient autoanalyzer, data entry and initial data processing, cleaning laboratory equipment and maintaining a clean work area.

10% - Prepare supplies for research expeditions including inventory, ordering, packing, and shipping supplies and equipment.

15% - Participate on research cruises. Sea duties may include preparing, deploying, and sampling the CTD-rosette system, overseeing seawater sample collection, operating instrumentation for analysis of seawater samples, and helping other research teams.

5% - Laboratory analysis of oxygen and chlorophyll concentrations in seawater.

5% - Participate in team meetings and contribute to data and cruise reports

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
•          Possess a BA or BS in science with a strong background in chemistry.
• The minimum amount of job-related experience required to successfully perform the duties of the job is one to three years.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

•           Theoretical and practical knowledge of analytical chemistry and statistics needed for sample analysis, data processing and quality control.
•           Ability to write technical/scientific reports, laboratory records, and manage files in standard and electronic formats.
•           Careful attention to detail in filling out data forms and in analytical procedures.
•           Knowledge of and experience using Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite.
•           Must be able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
•           Ability to positively interact with diverse personalities from various institutions and organizations
•           Must be prepared to go to sea for 60-120 days per year.
•           Ability to drive a car and truck and have a valid driver’s license.
•           Must be able to give and hear verbal commands in a noisy environment at sea. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

DESIRED:

•           Background in Oceanography or Marine Science.
•           Programming with software such as Python, R, Matlab
•           Proven ability to work at sea for extended periods of time. This will include being able to work in laboratories or on deck with machinery in rough weather.
•           Experience in performing sample analysis. Proven ability to carry out chemical and biological analyses at sea and in the laboratory.
•           Sound knowledge of chemical principles and regulations needed to oversee safe handling, storage and shipping of hazmat.
