The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Genetics Research Division, is seeking a Researcher V. Our group (www.mitochondria.org) has a longstanding interest in understanding the role of mitochondrial genetics in human diversity, mitochondria-to-nucleus retrograde crosstalk, numtogenesis (nuclear mitochondrial biogenesis), mitonuclear genomic instability in cancer and cancer health disparities. We have an excellent academic environment and research facilities at the Department of Genetics. UAB is a major research university and academic health center that offers a highly interactive scientific environment with state-of-the-art research and core facilities and a multidisciplinary work environment. The Department of Genetics fosters collaborations with other basic science as well as clinical departments and the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. Those with interest and experience in mitochondrial biology, biogenesis, genetics, and epigenetics such as DNA methylation and mouse and cell culture models of cancer and/or human diseases are strongly encouraged to apply.

General Responsibilities  

  • To be responsible for the overall operation of the lab. 
  • To oversee projects within the lab.  
  • To contribute to the design, interpretation and writing of grant proposals and publications.  
  • To supervise a research team, direct and teach lab practices.  
  • To manage lab equipment and supplies. 

Key Duties & Responsibilities  

  • Assumes significant responsibility for the overall operation of the lab. 
  • Oversees projects within the laboratory. 
  • Monitors results, detects and reports unusual outcomes, develops and implements modifications and provides reports or other consultation to management. 
  • Contributes to the design, interpretation and writing of grant proposals and publications. 
  • Supervises and oversees maintenance of lab equipment and orders and supervises lab supplies. 
  • Uses advanced knowledge of lab practices to direct and teach others by developing guidelines and conducting face-to-face/virtual training. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 
  • Annual Salary Range     $49,004.80 - $95,500.00

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Doctorate in a related field and one (1) year of related experience  
    • OR  Master's degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience  
    • OR  Bachelor’s degree in related field and five (5) years of related experience 

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. 

    Preferences

    • Experience in mitochondrial techniques, OXPHOS enzymatic assays, cell culture, and standard molecular and epigenetic techniques including cloning, real-time PCR, transfection, Southern, Northern, and Western analysis, and immunoprecipitation.
    • Experience in tumorigenesis assays such as soft agar, matrigel invasion, and mouse xenograft is also preferred.
    • Ability to design and perform experiments and interpret data independently. Self-motivated, resourceful, and a Ph. D degree preferred.
