The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a Researcher V to work closely with the Scientific Director and operations team of the Southeastern Biosafety Laboratory Alabama Birmingham (SEBLAB) to support research requiring Biosafety Level-3/Animal Biosafety Level- 3 (BSL-3/ABSL-3 or A/BSL-3) containment. The individual will ensure safe and effective use of basic and cutting-edge scientific equipment within containment, oversee scientific projects, and work with research staff to execute scientific experiments. The individual will contribute to the design, interpretation, and writing of grant proposals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and publications. The individual will execute BSL-3 in vitro and in vivo research, direct and teach lab practices, and to manage lab equipment and supplies.

General Responsibilities  

  • To be responsible for the overall operation of the lab. 
  • To oversee projects within the lab.  
  • To contribute to the design, interpretation and writing of grant proposals and publications.  
  • To supervise a research team, direct and teach lab practices.  
  • To manage lab equipment and supplies. 

Key Duties & Responsibilities  

  • Work with the Scientific Director and SEBLAB core research team to ensure safe and effective operation of basic and cutting-edge scientific equipment to support BSL-3/ABSL-3 high containment research and the development of medical countermeasures for emerging pathogens (vaccines, drugs, serology, diagnostics).
  • Serve as a key member of the SEBLAB core research team to establish and drive six new scientific cores within SEBLAB including: Cell culture core, Microbiology core, In vivo core, In vitro core, Single cell core, and Pandemic Preparedness core.
  • Train with and work with UAB Core lab leaders throughout the institution to gain expertise in cutting-edge imaging techniques and operate these technologies within SEBLAB.
  • Work with vendors to implement new equipment and coordinate training efforts for Principal Investigators (PI) research staff.
  • Supervise and oversee the maintenance of specialized lab equipment and essential consumables to operate these instruments.
  • Educate and train PI research personnel to use scientific equipment.
  • Assists the SEBLAB Operations Team and PI research staff in the development and optimization of scientific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Contribute to the design, interpretation, and writing of grant proposals and publications.
  • Monitors results, detects and reports unusual outcomes, develops and implements modifications, and provides reports or other consultation to management.
  • Attend annual NBL/RBL scientific meetings and other pertinent national high containment training opportunities/conferences as indicated by management.
  • Contribute to SEBLAB Operations promoting a culture of continuous improvement and optimization of biosafety practices, facility operations, animal welfare, and scientific productivity.
  • Assumes significant responsibility for the overall operation of the lab. 
  • Oversees projects within the laboratory. 
  • Monitors results, detects and reports unusual outcomes, develops and implements modifications and provides reports or other consultation to management. 
  • Contributes to the design, interpretation and writing of grant proposals and publications. 
  • Supervises and oversees maintenance of lab equipment and orders and supervises lab supplies. 
  • Uses advanced knowledge of lab practices to direct and teach others by developing guidelines and conducting face-to-face/virtual training. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 
  • Annual Salary Range     $49,004.80 - $95,500.00

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Doctorate in a related field and one (1) year of related experience  
    • OR  Master's degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience  
    • OR  Bachelor’s degree in related field and five (5) years of related experience 

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
