Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. with three years of applied research experience in a related field. A Master's degree and five years of applied research experience may be substituted for the requirements noted. Grade 6 (Min $51,700, Mid $64,600, Max $77,600).

Position Description:

The Researcher will support the research needs of Drs. Carter and Buonpane.  Dr. Carter's research involves translational and basic science projects. He is studying methods for monitoring critical illness non-invasively. This includes collection of exhaled breath condensate from mechanically ventilated patients as well as investigating novel techniques for diagnosing and monitoring gut health in critically ill infants. Dr. Buonpane's research looks at the intestinal epithelial changes in Necrotizing Enterocolitis and maternal/perinatal/postnatal factors that contribute to the predisposition for NEC using human samples, an intestinal organoid model as well as mouse models.  The individual will be responsible for literature review, conducting the most of proposed experiments, data collection and analysis, progress reports, scientific presentation, manuscript preparation for publication, and integrity in research.  The individual also needs to develop new technical protocols and design supplemental experiments if it is necessary for the project.  In addition, the individual will assist Principal Investigator (PI) to renew or submit a proposal, including carryout of any related preliminary experiments and data consolidation.  The individual will participate in training the graduate/undergraduate/summer students, technicians, and assist the PIs to oversee the bench-side research activities in the lab.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducting the experiments designed for the project with detailed document recordings, data collection and analysis, progress reports, scientific presentation (oral and poster), and manuscript preparation.
  • Mice management, breeding, and drug administration. 
  • Development of a variety of technical protocols and methods related to animal models, enteroid models, gene expression, immunohistochemical staining, and imaging analyses.
  • Review literatures and development of theoretical knowledge of research focus.
  • Conducting any experiments and other preparation regarding a renew or submission of the PI's grant application.
  • Attendance of all training activities required by UofL, department, PRI, and lab, and comply with all regulations and policies.
  • Training and supervising the lab research personnel the routine activities in the lab.
  • Assistance with lab management and supplies.
Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
