Description

 

Position available in the laboratory of Dr. Tika Benveniste at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for a researcher IV or V interested in studying immune-nervous system interactions in animal models of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s Disease (PD).

 

General Responsibilities

  • Under Minimal supervision, to set up and perform independent projects and established lab procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter and summarize date.
  • To monitor results and report unusual outcomes. 

Key Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Work in pre-clinical models of MS and PD to evaluate how the immune system contributes to neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration.
  • Analyze immune cells that infiltrate into the CNS by flow cytometry and RNAseq.
  • Use of small molecule inhibitors of various immune signaling pathways (JAK/STAT and CK2} to determine contribution to disease pathogenesis.
  • Sets up and performs routine and established Jab procedures in support of Jab goals. Runs cell culture, genotyping, flow cytometry and isolation of primary cells.
  • Maintain mouse colony.
  • Collects, enters, and summarizes data.
  • Monitors results; detects and reports unusual outcomes.
  • Assists in the maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment and supplies.
  • Performs basic statistical data analysis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Salary

    Salary commensurate with experience (this will not change)

     

    Qualifications

     

    Requirements

    • A PhD or equivalent degree is required.
    • Highly motivated postdoctoral candidates with strong research background in immunology, neurobiology, flow cytometry, molecular biology, tissue culture, RNAseq and animal research are especially encouraged to apply. 

    Preferences

    • On the job training is available, but candidates with prior experience with cell biology, molecular biology and immunology techniques such as quantitative real-time PCR, immunoblotting, and scRNA-Seq are preferred.
    • Prior experience with mouse colony management, flow cytometry and isolation of primary cells is desired.
    • Previous experience in a basic science lab is preferred.
