General Information

Position available in the laboratory of Dr. Sunnie Thompson at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for researcher interested in molecular virology research related to understanding virus-host interactions. Viruses rely on host proteins and pathways for viral production.  Our research focuses understanding these pathways in order to better understand the viral life cycle and identify potential new antiviral targets. We use a number of techniques, such as single cell microscopy, western analysis, cell culture and molecular approaches.  Our research studies polyomaviruses, coronaviruses, flaviviruses, and enteroviruses.

General Responsibilities

Under minimal supervision:

  • The ideal candidate will perform a wide variety of moderately complex laboratory experiments for publication.
  • To collect, enter, present and summarize data.
  • To monitor results and report unusual outcomes.
  • To observe, think, and be creative about approaching research questions.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Sets up and performs routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals.
  • Performs sterile cell culture techniques, immunofluorescent assays, flow cytometry, viral purification and titers, western analysis, RNA-seq, and real-time PCR.
  • Maintains laboratory records and stocks.
  • Collects, enters, presents, and summarizes data.
  • Monitors results; detects and reports unusual outcomes.
  • Ability to work as a team and with a diverse group of people.
  • Maintains organized and detailed lab notebook.

    Preferences

    • An interest in performing basic science research.
    • On the job, training is available, but candidates with prior experience with cell culture and molecular biology techniques such as the following, even if exposure is only through laboratory coursework, are preferred.
    • Prior experience with:
    • Purification of nucleic acids
    • Quantitative real-time PCR
    • Immunoblotting
    • The production of lentivirus
    • Sterile tissue culture techniques
    • Flow cytometry
