The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Microbiology is seeking a Researcher IV in the laboratory of Dr. Terje Dokland. The lab employs a combination of microbial genetics, biochemistry, and structural biology approaches to study various aspects of bacteriophage host range, genetic mobilization and antibiotic resistance in staphylococci and streptococci. The successful candidate will have responsibility for the day-to-day management of the lab, carry out independent research in support of lab goals, and collaborate with and support postdocs and students.

General Responsibilities

Working with a high degree of independence: 

  • To oversee projects within the laboratory
  • To assume responsibility for the day-to-day operation of lab activities. 
  • To collect, enter, summarize, analyze, and interpret data. 
  • To contribute significantly to the planning/design of studies. 
  • To help develop long or short-term goals.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the lab, including ordering, budgeting, lab safety, keeping chemical and strain inventories, equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Performs experiments in support of lab projects, including bacterial growth, phage purification, molecular cloning, protein purification and analysis.
  • Assists and train students and postdocs.
  • Contribute to project development and publication, collect data and present results at lab meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Annual Salary Range         $47,486.40 - $50,000.00

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Doctorate in a related field
    • OR Master's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
    • OR Bachelor’s degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience
    • OR Associate's degree in related field and six (6) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

    • BS or MS degree in a life science field.
    • Strong preparative skills and some experience with standard molecular biology and protein biochemistry approaches are essential.
    • Experience with bacterial genetics, especially cloning in staphylococci and/or streptococci.

    • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
