The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Molecular & Cellular Pathology is seeking a Researcher III. The position will serve as laboratory manager in a dynamic, cutting-edge research environment to support our mission by ensuring the seamless operation of our laboratory. The department studies aging specific disease mechanisms by modeling chronic inflammatory diseases using old mice. The department uses cutting edge molecular biology, immunology, and genetic approaches including flow cytometry, imaging, and single-cell RNA sequencing. The department uses a variety of murine model systems to understand neurodegeneration and atherosclerosis. The department is particularly interested in how cytotoxic T cells contribute to autoimmunity and disease pathology.

General Responsibilities

Working with a high degree of independence: 

  • To oversee projects within the laboratory
  • To assume responsibility for the day-to-day operation of lab activities. 
  • To collect, enter, summarize, analyze, and interpret data. 
  • To contribute significantly to the planning/design of studies. 
  • To help develop long or short-term goals.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintaining, handling, breeding, and genotyping of laboratory mouse colony, adhering to ethical and legal standards.
  • Managing laboratory inventory, including ordering and stocking laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables.
  • Reconciling orders with laboratory accounts.
  • Conducting assays and experiments with biological tissues, fluids, and cells derived from mice, with a strong understanding of molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell culture techniques.
  • Overseeing the care and handling of our mouse colony, performing biological assays, maintaining safety protocols, data analysis, and training junior scientists.
  • Training for new techniques. Specific techniques include flow cytometry, histology, ELISA, Western blot, mouse surgery, mouse injections, cell culture, dissections/tissue harvest, blood collection, mouse behavior testing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Annual Salary Range         $47,486.40 - $85,000.00

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Doctorate in a related field
    • OR Master's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
    • OR Bachelor’s degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience
    • OR Associate's degree in related field and six (6) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

    • Proficient in laboratory operations, communication, organization, with a background in molecular biology.
