Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Surgery - Pediatric is seeking a Researcher III. The ideal candidate will have experience in basic science research, cell culture, and animal studies. The research focuses on understanding changes in cellular metabolism and differentiation in pediatric solid tumors with a focus on neuroblastoma.

General Responsibilities

As directed:

  • To independently set up and perform experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.

  • To collect, enter, summarize, and analyze data.

  • To monitor results, detect and report unusual outcomes and suggest modifications.

  • To develop and improve techniques for the lab.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages lab, including ordering and receiving lab supplies as well as working to keep equipment operational.

  • Maintains cell culture and mouse colony.

  • Performs basic statistical data analysis.

  • Develops and improves techniques for the lab.

  • Develops and improve techniques for the lab.

  • Handles payments including invoices, PO requests, and other related tasks.

  • Contributes to planning/design of studies.
  • Interfaces with core facilities on campus.

  • Prepares publications.

  • Works in a team with in-depth knowledge in cancer research.

  • Assists in planning long or short term goals/fiscal management.
  • Safely disposes of infectious waste in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.

  • Trains and supervises students and other laboratory personnel.

  • Keeps accurate notes and records.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Annual Salary Range $35,570.00 - $59,800.00



    Qualifications

    • Master's degree in a related field

    • OR Bachelor's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience

    • OR Associate's degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

    • Previous experience in a basic science lab.

    • Experience with cell culture techniques.

    • Background in molecular biology with experience in Western blotting, RNA and DNA isolation, and PCR.

    • Knowledge of assays to evaluate cellular metabolism.

    • Experience working with mice including tumor implantation, tumor measurement, harvesting of tumors, blood collection, and treatment with drugs.
