The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics is seeking a Researcher III. The Bedwell lab seeks to understand the mechanism and regulation of translation, the process by which mRNAs are decoded into proteins. Research in the lab combines knowledge and techniques from multiple disciplines, including biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, and bioinformatics to perform both basic and translational research.

General Responsibilities

As directed:

  • To independently set up and perform experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter, summarize, and analyze data.
  • To monitor results, detect and report unusual outcomes and suggest modifications.
  • To develop and improve techniques for the lab.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains a large mouse core facility, including breeding, weaning, and genotyping (the core facility provides mice to cystic fibrosis researchers).
  • Maintains detailed mouse core documentation.
  • Performs molecular biology lab techniques such as DNA isolation and PCR.
  • Manages the maintenance of multiple mouse strains according to approved IACUC protocols. Documents breeders and offspring.
  • Generates working chemical solutions/reagents for various assays (buffers, agarose, etc.). Collects tail snips and isolate DNA for genotyping using PCR.
  • Maintains detailed and accurate hard copy and database records of the mouse colony.
  • Assists with other procedures as needed to characterize or treat mice.
  • Administration of therapies to mice.
  • Perfusion of mice.
  • Harvesting of mouse tissues for various CFTR assays.
  • RNA isolation from mouse tissues, quantitative PCR, or digital PCR to genotype mice, examine gene expression, or determine gene copy number.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    • OR Associate's degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

    • Degree in biology, chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, bioinformatics, or a related field.
    • Previous research lab experience.

    Key Skills

    • Strong attention to detail.
    • Clear and effective verbal and written communication.
    • Ability to document and keep a standard lab notebook.

The U. S. Department of Labor (DOL)’s Wage and Hour Division (WHD) recently finalized a rule amending the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime regulations. This is not a UAB decision; it is a federal law all employers must follow. This rule brings changes to the criteria determining exemption status under the FLSA. UAB Human Resources has assessed the impact of these adjustments to ensure a proactive and effective response. Consequently, starting June 30, 2024, it is possible that this position may undergo reclassification from exempt to nonexempt status. As a nonexempt employee, you will transition from monthly to biweekly payroll and must track and record all hours worked, adhering to UAB’s policies for nonexempt employees. If legal action occurs and the implementation of the FLSA change is blocked/paused, UAB will hold on making any changes, including moving employees from exempt to nonexempt.
