The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology, is seeking a highly motivated Researcher III to perform physiological and genetic-based research in the Drosophila (Fruit flies) laboratory. The ideal candidate should be well familiar with cardiovascular, metabolic, cytological, and circadian-related, microbiome-related assays. 

 

General Responsibilities

As directed:

  • To independently set up and perform experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter, summarize, and analyze data.
  • To monitor results, detect and report unusual outcomes and suggest modifications.
  • To develop and improve techniques for the lab.  

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs routine genetic fly crosses, and collects progeny for aging, functional, and behavior assays.
  • Performs data collection and analyses under the supervision of the PI/Supervisor in association with Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows.
  • Performs physiological and genetic-based research in the Drosophila (Fruit flies) laboratory. Should be familiar with manuscript and scientific report writing.
  • Maintains Drosophila (flies) stocks and stocking of reagents, research chemicals, stocking of consumable items, routine lab cleaning, and upkeep.
  • Provides routine training to volunteering undergraduates for maintaining Drosophila stocks, in performing genetic crosses, functional and behaviors assays, and in the collaborations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Annual Salary Range         $35,570.00 - $46,300.00

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Master's degree in a related field
    • OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
    • OR Associate's degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with PC and MAC operating systems, standard business office equipment, and commonly used software and tools, such as Microsoft Office, electronic mail, and the Internet.
