Researcher II

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Anesthesiology, is seeking a Researcher II who will perform basic research functions in support of departmental initiatives and current research projects. We also seek a candidate with experience performing basic laboratory techniques such as cell culture, western blotting, PCR, protein quantification etc

General Responsibilities

Under minimal supervision:

  • To set up and perform routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter, and summarize data.
  • To monitor results and report unusual outcomes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Sets up and performs routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals.
  • Runs assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, etc.
  • Collects, enters and summarizes data.
  • Monitors results; detects and reports unusual outcomes.
  • Assists in the maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment and supplies.
  • Performs basic statistical data analysis.
  • Performs fundamental statistical data analysis.
  • Maintain colonies of transgenic mice 
  • Perform physiological measurements in mice after sacrifice 
  • Measurements of protein concentrations, western blotting studies, PCR and RT-PCR, measurements of airway resistance
  • Expose mice to oxidant gases after appropriate training 
  • Data analysis and presentations in lab meetings 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Hourly Salary Range     $15.50 - $23.51

     

     

    Qualifications

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
    • OR Associate's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
    • OR High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Key Skills

    • Basic office software including word, excel, and powerpoint.
    • Good communication skills for teamwork and project coordination with investigators
    • Organized
    • Good time management Imaging analysis software experience if possible

    Preferences

    • Experience working with handling and performing minor surgical procedures in mice. 
    • Basic computer skills including knowledge of Excel
    • Knowledge of Photoshop or equivalent will be a big plus as well 
    • Excellent verbal skills and the ability to work closely and being supervised by other members of the laboratory.
    • Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Physiology or equivalent
