The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Pathology, is seeking a highly motivated Researcher II to join the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology in a part-time role.

 

This position will require work in a biomedical research lab and performing routine lab activities including maintaining the lab inventory - chemicals, reagents, placing orders, maintaining mouse lines - knockout/transgenic lines, genotyping, DNA/RNA isolation, performing qPCR-based gene expression, protein isolation from specific tissues such as heart, brain, skeletal muscle. Other biochemical analysis includes protein quantification, identifying/quantifying the expression of various protein targets using immunoblotting, preparing samples for proteomic analysis, etc. The position duties will also include maintaining lab notebooks, records, updating the OHS related documentation, assisting with writing animal protocols. Also, requires to closely work with the other lab members including postdocs, graduate, and undergraduate trainees. Position will also attend regular/weekly lab meetings, reporting to the PI on a weekly basis and assisting with statistical analysis, preparing images/figures for the manuscripts, grant applications, etc.

General Responsibilities

Under minimal supervision:

  • To set up and perform routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter and summarize data.
  • To monitor results and report unusual outcomes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs laboratory experiments including Biochemistry, protein and gene expression, Immunoblotting, RNA isolation and qPCR. Sacrificing mice and harvesting biopsies as directed.
  • Prepares tissue homogenates from heart, brain, etc. and performs protein expression analysis.
  • Maintains mouse colonies including breeding, weaning, genotyping preparing inventories.
  • Prepares and maintains lab inventory, documentation of the results (lab notebooks electronic documentation).
  • Assists with animal protocols and OHS documentation and schedules bi-annual audits.
  • Attends regular lab meetings and reports to the PI on a weekly basis.
  • Assists other lab members (Graduate and postdoctoral trainees) and trains undergraduate researchers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Hourly Salary Range     $15.50 - $18.25

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
    • OR Associate's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
    • OR High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

    • Experience with basic biochemistry lab skills including DNA/RNA and protein isolation methods, performing immunoblotting, qPCR and gene expression analysis, small animal maintenance including breeding, weaning, tagging, genotyping and inventory maintenance.

    Key Skills

    • Basic computer knowledge to enter/process the data files and run statistical analyses.
    • Able to prepare images/figures using Adobe-Illustrator and others including Excel Spreadsheet, PowerPoint, etc.
