Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Anatomic Pathology, is seeking a Researcher I. The position will encompass every aspect of the collection and processing of human tissue.

General Responsibilities

Under direct supervision:

  • To perform various support functions in a research laboratory.
  • To maintain equipment, computer database and lab supplies.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Communicate with clinical trial staff, operating room staff, surgeons, pathologists, and Surgical Pathology staff;

  • Communicate with clinical trial staff and researchers regarding requests for services as well as coordination of collection and shipment of tissues.

  • Coordinate and process Surgical Path archival material retrieval and refile; document the process with details and create report for each request.

  • Work with biohazardous material, liquid nitrogen, dry ice, and hazardous chemicals (e.g., neutral buffered formalin). Maintaining grossing areas and supply inventory.

  • Communicate with Procurement Coordinator regarding issues affecting tissue collections.

  • Coordinate with other TBR teams to ensure proper tissue processing, storage, and shipment.

  • Utilize informatics programs and spreadsheets to document daily tissue collections and prepare monthly reports.

  • Cross train to assist with and back up other positions in our area (e.g., collecting specimens from other areas, autopsy, foreskins, retrieving archival material from Surgical Path or TBR inventory, and may potentially aid in histology including tissue microarray,)

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Hourly Salary Range $15.00 - $19.66



    Qualifications

    • Associate's degree in a related field

    • OR High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
