Description

 

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is seeking a Researcher I.  The position will involve animal (rat and mice) work, including chemical (halogen) exposures and post exposure monitoring of clinical symptoms, rodent surgery, maintaining mouse breeding colonies and performing genotyping, ELISA's, Western blotting, other biochemical assays, and ordering lab supplies.

General Responsibilities

Under direct supervision:

  • To perform various support functions in a research laboratory.
  • To maintain equipment, computer database and lab supplies.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Monitor results and ability to detect and reports unusual outcomes.
  • Ability to collect, enter and summarize data and performs basic statistical data analysis.
  • Assist in the maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment and supplies. 
  • Perform general laboratory processes including research activities including animal care, western blots, and assay.
  • Manage and interpret data and maintain ordering and inventory processes.
  • Document laboratory activities and ensure routine equipment maintenance.
  • Utilize chemicals ensuring safety and maintain cleaning techniques consistent with quality standards.
  • Contribute to publications and grant submissions and participate in administrative meetings.
  • Maintain product inventory, preparation of common reagents/solutions, buffers, and media, wash and sterilize lab ware. 
  • Maintain overall cleanliness in areas of responsibility.
  • Managing biohazard waste pick-up, liquid nitrogen, and CO2 refills.
  • Participate in team meetings to identify and solve problems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Hourly Salary Range     $15.00 - $19.66                  

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Associate's degree in a related field
    • OR High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience

      Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

     

    • BS or BA in a relevant field (e.g., biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology)  
    • Experience in a laboratory setting.
    • Rodent handling and surgery, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, etc.
