The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM), is expanding full-time research associate (RA) support for federal sponsored research awards to identify older adults who may be at high risk for developing delirium. Subjects enrolled in this project will be those aged 65 or older who present to the UAB - Highlands Hospital Level 1 accredited Geriatric Emergency Department (ED).  The RA will be trained on performing cognitive and functional assessments, including the Nursing Delirium Screening Scale (NuDESC, Confusion Assessment Method (CAM), Brief Alzheimer Screen (BAS), Katz Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and more, to determine the incidence and time course of delirium among older adults in the ED setting.

 

The UAB-DEM is seeking to hire two Researcher I positions, which will primarily be responsible for performing the day-to-day activities at the UAB - Highlands Hospital Emergency Department (HED) for the above-mentioned project, and secondarily support other on-going studies in the UAB ED.

 

General Responsibilities

  • Conduct all study activities in accordance with the UAB-IRB approved protocol and standard Good Clinical Practices (GCP).
  • Assist with day-to-day screening and enrollment activities including initiating informed consent interviews, conducting patient interviews, including cognitive/functional screening assessments, completion of chart reviews, and accurate entry of study data into the REDCap database.
  • Participate in routine internal meetings and quarterly partner network meetings.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with investigators or clinical research staff, recruits and enrolls patients in projects according to the study protocol based on defined criteria.
  • Interacts with treating physicians and nurses to coordinate research procedures without disrupting routine healthcare services. Interacts with research subjects and/or their family members to provide general information concerning study protocols or to collect study data.
  • Assists with completing electronic data collection forms, including navigating hospital Electronic Management Record systems to abstract and enter clinical study data.
  • Works with patient care staff to collect biological specimens and deliver specimens to hospital laboratories.
  • Contacts participants by telephone to schedule follow-up appointments or complete post-discharge data collection tasks.
  • Assists clinical research staff prepare for routine meetings and site monitoring visits, including supporting efforts to resolve data discrepancies or other quality improvement tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Hourly Salary Range     $15.00 - $19.00

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Associate's degree in a related field
    • OR High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

    • Bachelor’s degree in related fields of public health, pre-medical/health-related sciences, social work or research experience in clinical settings preferred.  

    Key Skills

    • Strong interpersonal communication skills, as well as positive and empathetic bedside manner required.
    • Must be detail-oriented, capable of multi-tasking in fast-paced clinical environments, and consistently demonstrate compassion and respect for hospital patients.
