A position available in the laboratory of Dr. Brian R Davis at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for scientists and technicians who are interested in stem cell biology and genome editing technology. The Davis lab focuses on developing a new strategy of gene and cell therapy for Cystic Fibrosis and other genetic disorders. This position will involve working with animals and/or BSL II pathogen and cell culture. The lab will provide the successful candidate(s) with the opportunity to learn stem cell research techniques including adult stem cells and iPSC culture and differentiation, gene editing in vitro and in vivo, flow cytometry and cell sorting, DNA/RNA/protein extraction and quantification, histology, microscopy and other techniques under direct supervision. This position requires both assisting others and performing various support functions in the research laboratory independently.

 

General Responsibilities

Under minimal or full supervision from PI and others, depending on candidate’s education and experience level as well as assignment, the successful candidate will perform some or all of the following in order to assist trainees (e.g., postdoctoral fellows, graduate students) and other scientists in the lab. The successful candidate with significant experiences may oversee trainee’s projects and/or lead own project in coordination with PI.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Set ups and performs experiments and procedures in support of lab goals. (Common methodologies are: cell isolation and culture, iPSC differentiation, molecular analysis, recombinant DNA construction, flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting, and immunohistochemistry.)
  • Contributes to planning/designing of studies. May assist in planning long or short term goals/fiscal management.
  • Collects, enters, summarizes and analyzes data.
  • Monitors results, detects and reports unusual outcomes and suggests modifications.
  • Coordinates exchanging samples between collaborators, cores, and us.
  • Performs maintenance of lab equipment and supplies.
  • Cleans lab (biowaste, glassware).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Salary

    Will be commensurate with experience.

    Qualifications

     

    Requirements

    Applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree in a science related field upon starting the position. 

    Preferences

    • On the job training is available, but candidates with prior experience with research animals, with human cell culture and/or in a basic science lab is preferred. 
    • Applicants who have significant experience with adult stem cell or embryonic stem cell (ESC)/iPSC culture and/or small animal survival surgery, experience with multi-channel flow cytometry or FACS, or experience with basic research histology and microscopy and image analysis are strongly encouraged to apply.
