Summary: 
The Center for Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics (CMSP) and the Klatt Lab are seeking to hire a Researcher 3 to execute metabolomic and proteomics workflows and a wide variety of biological samples. Additionally, CMSP needs assistance in maintaining general laboratory operations. The successful candidate will work closely with senior personnel to coordinate and execute sample preparation, method development, and other duties related to operations in a biological mass spectrometry-based environment. Working with other staff and researcher members, this person will focus on optimizing metabolomic sample preparations that will be used to expand CMSPâ™s existing and future metabolomics capabilities, create and maintain SOPs, assist with standardized proteomics sample preparation, and assist with activities related to routine lab maintenance (safety, tracking supply inventory etc). This person will be expected to gain an understanding of facility operations to assist fellow staff members and move user projects forward. The work requires attention to detail and the ability to work with a team of colleagues on multiple projects. Strong written communication and interpersonal skills are required, as well as the ability to interpret and implement protocols and instruction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work, and follow through on assignments.

30% Prepare samples following standardized protocols for metabolomic analysis in the CMSP facility
Use standardized protocols to prepare samples submitted by facility users for metabolomic analysis using mass spectrometry platforms available in the CMSP facility; prepare standardized samples for mass spectrometry analysis and generation of spectral libraries for untargeted metabolomics 1Essential

Use standardized protocols in LC-MS and bacterial cell culture to prepare, analyze, and process metabolomic and proteomic samples for the Klatt lab using mass spectrometry and genomic platforms; interpret and present findings in person and written formats for publication. 1Essential

20% Assist in development, validation and standardization of new sample preparation methods
Working with senior staff members, carry out testing and validation of new methods for preparing samples for metabolomics analysis as required by CMSP users; learn to utilize mass spectrometry instrumentations as necessary to verify effectiveness of new methods and apply to user projects 1Essential

10% Assist with operational activities for the CMSP
Track of reagent and supply inventory and place orders via UMN UMarket and/or request UMN purchase orders with vendors routinely. Update and maintain File Maker Pro Inventory and Ordering modules, as well as assist in updating billing for services and instruments. 1Essential

5% Assist in training and educational activities offered by the CMSP
Train facility users on sample prep techniques. Assist in organizing and administering workshops to CMSP users and students. Contact UMN Administration to disseminate CMSP workshop or seminar information.
 

Required Qualifications: 
BA/BS degree chemistry, biochemistry or a related field is required and 2 years of related experience of a combination of education and work experience to equal 6 years. 
Preferred Qualifications: 
A minimum of a bachelorâ™s degree chemistry, biochemistry or a related field. Experience in routine laboratory activities such as making buffers, following written SOPâ™s, pipetting skills. Must have attention to detail and careful record keeping in laboratory notebook and/or other formats for tracking samples and ensuring high quality results from sample preparation.   Must be able to work within a collaborative setting, interfacing with other staff members and users of the facility. Mastery of contemporary software tools (e.g Microsoft Word, Excel) is a must.
