Researcher I – Lab and Field Manager

The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture is seeking a researcher I – lab and field manager.  This position provides skilled technical support to agricultural research operations. Position assists in the planning of experiments and the development of test procedures. Position participates in the interpretation of data, development of conclusions, and contributes to presentations. Specifically, the position will perform soil and root sampling and analysis; isolate and maintain bacterial and fungal isolates and generate inoculum; run molecular genetic equipment and tests; rate and record disease ratings in field trials and from leaf samples; perform diagnostic tests on plant samples received from county agents and farmers; and use dissecting and compound microscopes in pathogen identification and research procedures.

 



Qualifications

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees and performs research experiments and projects in row crops
  • Coordination and managing plant production
  • Design of experimental protocols for lab, field, and greenhouse experiments
  • Data analysis and interpretation and preparation of experimental reports
  • Builds and organizes trial maps on ARM Software
  • Coordinates and trains summer interns and supports graduate and post doc research
  • Writes and trains protocol for lab and field research projects

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • BS in Plant Pathology or other life sciences, professional experience may be substituted on a year for year basis
  • 1-2 years’ experience working in a research setting
  • Able to organize and execute multiple team research projects in the field and laboratory while maintaining accurate records
  • Intermediate software skills in Microsoft Office, and ARM (Agricultural Resource Management software).
  • Knowledge of probable field plant pathogens and able to Isolate and identify field samples (using media, microscopes, a camera, and molecular tools as needed)
  • Knowledge of field weather conditions and impact on pathogen likelihood
  • Able to interpret data results and assist in written composition of reports
  • Able to work independently as well as in a team setting
  • Valid Driver’s license and ability to operate large trucks

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • MS in Plant Pathology or other life sciences
  • Experience in row crop management
  • Precise laboratory procedures
  • Precise record maintenance

Regular full time position with benefits

Pay Range: MR08 $38.8k-50k based on qualifications and experience

Location: The University of Tennessee, West TN Research & Education Center, Jackson TN
