Job Description:

Information Technology Services (ITS) at the University at Albany is seeking applicants for the position of Research Technology Manager. This is an exciting time for this role as the University builds one of the largest AI (Artificial Intelligence) research infrastructures in higher education working with industry leaders such as NVIDIA and IBM. The Research Technology Manager leads a growing staff of analysts and developers and oversees the work of teams delivering technology and services to the research community. The successful candidate has experience and expertise in supporting researchers' technological needs in a sophisticated research environment

The manager delivers analytical and computational IT solutions to provide cutting edge resources while supporting administrative systems, data services, computing, and advanced applications. She/He/They are deeply engaged with researchers and technology professionals, often leading groups and teams that include direct reports and technical staff from other areas within the organization. The manager plays a critical role in building, delivering, and supporting the IT needs of the research community while ensuring the technical infrastructure is robust, secure, and can scale to meet evolving research needs. The successful candidate has excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and is comfortable working with individuals, from front-line staff to campus leadership across a variety of disciplines.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership in the development and ongoing management of technology services in support of the University's research enterprise.
  • Foster and maintain communication with researchers regarding service planning and delivery.
  • Lead and develop a team of direct reports to provide subject matter expertise for developing advanced data analytics/statistics, visualization, and computational technologies across disciplines, offering professional development opportunities as appropriate.
  • Oversee and guide service delivery teams which include staff from across the organization.
  • Oversee the operation, usage, and lifecycle of cloud-based and on-premises AI systems including a 24-node NVIDIA DGX A100 cluster.
  • Manage HPC (High Performance Computing) Cluster with 57 computational nodes and 3,808 computational CPU cores and 12 NVIDIA A40's.
  • Manage research administration systems, applications development, and hosting.
  • Implement managed scientific computing environments.
  • Serve as project manager for research projects as needed.
  • Understand industry trends, define and develop roadmaps to advance research-related services, and regularly share knowledge with ITS colleagues and the research community.
  • Lead and manage research collaboration support through established advisory committees and workgroups.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the security posture for assigned systems and applications in accordance with applicable university and ITS policies, procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of systems standards.
  • Manage and organize research storage.
  • Provide research Linux support.
  • Verify documentation and standardization of tools used in the management of applications, solutions, and service offerings within the research service (Gitlab, Ansible, etc.).
  • Oversee specialized desktop support for research lab workstations.
  • Be available to provide scheduled support and consultation outside normal business hours, including occasional evenings, holidays, or weekends, within reasonable professional obligation and expectation.


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • At least three years of research experience.
  • Ability to manage projects successfully.
  • Experience with statistics, mathematical modeling, probability, and data visualization.
  • Understands the fundamentals of data management, preservation, and reproducibility.
  • Familiarity with managing and manipulating structured and semi-structured data formats relevant to research computing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • At least two years supervisory experience.
  • At least one year's experience in direct management of IT-specific research projects. Experience with Linux based computing, Slurm Workload manager and CLI (command line interface) in a research computing context.
  • Experience with cloud-based platforms for researchers.
  • Understanding of statistical/mathematical programming (Jupyter, MATLAB, R, SAS, Stata, Scala, Python + Pandas).
  • Knowledge of both relational and non-relational databases.
  • A deep understanding of statistical hypothesis testing and experimental design, data visualization techniques and tools, and manipulation of large data sets.
  • Knowledge of public and proprietary sources of national and global data.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in facilitating user-based software applications that enable research or instructional activities (e.g., statistical software such as R, Python or commercial software products, and associated data visualization technologies such as GGPlot, GoogleVis, Shiny, Plotly, D3).
  • Familiarity with AI/ML principles, methodologies, and technologies and their application in academic research.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA Data Compliance.


Additional Information:

Professional Rank and Salary Range: Associate for University Systems Analyst, SL5; $115,000-125,000.
