Summary of Job Duties:

The Research Technologist provides support for research projects in an infectious disease microbiology laboratory within the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The Research Technologist will perform general and more specific laboratory tasks, including: cleaning and sterilization of glassware, general laboratory cleaning, preparation of cell culture media and chemical solutions using appropriate aseptic techniques, preparation of microbiological media, growth and maintenance of bacterial cultures, light maintenance of lab equipment (including water baths, incubators, etc.), performance of basic molecular biology and microbiological techniques (isolation, growth, quantitation, storage and recovery), maintenance of chemical inventories, and data entry. This position may allow for developing own research projects if desired.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree plus two (2) years of laboratory experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Candidate should have a basic knowledge of the equipment used in a research laboratory.

  • Should be capable of formulating and making stocks of media and other chemical reagents.

  • Prior experience in cell culture techniques and basic microbiological techniques.

  • Ability to keep organized records and notes needed.


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Performs or assists with experiments that provides direct data contribution to ongoing research efforts (includes molecular cloning, RNA and DNA isolation and analysis, PCR and qRT-PCR, cell culture, animal experiments, and bacterial culture).

  • Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies, cleaning and sterilization of glassware, general cleaning and restocking of the laboratory, making chemical reagents.

  • Performs light maintenance of laboratory equipment (water baths, biological safety cabinets, microscope, etc.).

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
