The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Research Technologist for the department of Otolaryngology. The position will be responsible for independently performing routine research testing and contributing to the general maintenance of the lab, supplies and equipment. Use basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Perform laboratory experiments by following protocols or with instruction. This may require techniques associated with electrophysiology.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The Research Technologist is expected to perform surgery (both survival and terminal), record eye movements and other behavioral tests, and perform extracellular recording from neurons in mice.
  • Will utilize in vivo models in experiments following experimental protocols, monitors animals and maintains lab records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines.
  • Complies with biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace.
  • Completes annual University biohazard/universal precaution safety training as appropriate.
  • Use sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.
  • Use universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers.
  • Prepares solutions following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Some experience with handling of mice, in vivo experiments with mice, behavioral training of mice.
  • Should also be able to use standard software (e.g., Microsoft office) and learn lab generated codes for data acquisition and analysis.
  • Surgeries and some of the experiments are delicate and require steady hands.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
